Have Used AVG (Free) for years and it works really well, never had any problems.
I also use AVG Tune Up, another good system, but you have to pay for it.

Something else I'd always recommend is another Free Program, SPYBOT.

Was recommended on Gadget Show a few years back and I've found it very useful.

Also be aware that AVG and Avast do ask you to renew the program every once in a while. You are taken to a web page to download the latest software however the completely free version is usually less obvious. Usually you get a bold letters Free Download or free trial of the pay for versions.

None of that with M.S.E which is another reason why I like it.

Microsoft Security Essentials, free and does not hog the internet at start up. All my computers now boot up at least a minute faster that they used to.

yup, agreed, MSE is very good, infact we are rolling it out within our company to replace the latest Symantec Product because it is so bad, MSE has always been good from day one.

Quite a low protection score:

It failed me a number of occasions and now I know why!
