external hard drives
are they any good ? ..... i have thousands of music files on my lappy , and think if i transfered to a external hard drive along with some other files it would clear my pc of poo, and make it run faster , so i could access my files when i want ...... are they any good for this purpose ?.... i have a old ex hard drive but havent connected it to this lappy yet

Personally i use them a lot to back up verious stuff (6TB in total i have).I look at it at least if your hard drive gives up totally, stuff is easy to get back. But up to you if you get a portable one or external one.

I brought an additional 2TB one from Ebuyer couple months ago, got a caddy with it to for like a fiver.
Well worth it mate, all that data soon clocks up, I am only about 1TB behind sp00k lol. Western Digital Caviar Green is what you should search for, good, smooth running and cool hard drives. Then you just need to buy the caddy it slots into (you buy the hard drive as an OEM product on its own as an internal hard drive). Gav |

The black rectangular box is its Caddy mate, there will be an internal HDD inside it.

I have a measly 500GB external Seagate jobby but my laptop spluttered last month and that reminded me to back everything up.It's not if it will pack up but simply when.

External Hard Drives
I have a 1 TB Aldi special Medion I think it was £79.00 its brilliant and has an extra connector SATA ? for high speed transfer that I use it just slots into the top of my PC.
For the laptop it has seperate power supply etc. |

im thinking that the more programs / files i move to a external hard drive , the faster my lappy will run .... ie not cluttered up ..... am i correct in this assumption ?

Partly Peter, but your issues isnt the amount of files on yoru drive, because iits reasonably well defragged, your problem is you have some issues (that I dont yet know the details of) that are slowing network systems down. Could be some issuesin vista, a dodgy update that needs reinstalling, or lack of updates, like cars, theres ahell of a lot of things it could be! Hopefully today I eliminated SOME.
