Of course they do...bigtime as we all know, so in the real world, even if you do manage to achieve those download rates (which I seriously doubt in most cases unless you're downloading from a fat server with massive pipes and nobody else connected) it won't be for long.

I've spent the last 20 years listening to IT techs telling me what things 'should' be doing while I have to explain to the client why it isn't LOL
theres no doubt external factors affect broadband speed, thats why ISP's advertise "up to", its a standard disclaimer! I think the point here is someones happy they have a decent connection, so that when thinsg do get a bit congested, they might fare better than someone with a slower speed line...it woudl be wonderful, if we could easily get a low or no contention ratio connection, but generaly thats reserved for business and wouldnt make THAT much of a difference!

All technically true, however, just downloaded something now with the same speed as I did at 6am this morning 6.2mbps.

For the most part, Cable customers tend to get hit less than the unfortunate among you that have to have ADSL

When I was speaking to the Virgin engineer when he installed my new modem/router he actually told me that Virgin are going to be GUARANTEEING 100 Meg with their new 100meg service, and not 1 meg under.

This is what makes cable internet soooooooo much better than ADSL, and dont forget, I work for BT

absolutely, cable is excellent, although didnt I hear BT were fitting soem new cables that were much higher capacity and capable of much higher speeds?? I was talking to a BT friend of mine last year about it...?

anyway, it sounds like you really are on a good connection although im not dissapointed with mine to be fair

Yeah BT are having to roll out newer cabling to support their BT Infinity Broadband, still not going to get anywhere near the speeds that Virgin offer, not yet anyway

Interesting debate but lmao , reminds me of debates as a kid, the derailleur gears on my bike means it goes faster than the one with sturmey archer...................so many different things to influence.

I just done that test 5 times within a few minutes and got 5 widely differing results so its clear theres a lot more to it

best below, worst 5.1

The only thing that bugs me about it is the fact that it makes people go out and spend money on superfast BB that they don't need....codded by the ISPs!

yeah, its all business first. ISP's are there to make money, not happy customers lol. imagine though, if they just did what they were supposed to do, and we all got un congested connections for the majority of the time? they'd be struggling for new business thats for sure!

Yeah but trouble is I don't reckon that would fix it...I've managed some massive contracts for major financial institutions and defence sector in my time and despite being on site early hours or late night, I found their pipes were little faster than what I'd get at home. And as I implied above, I spent a lot of time calming down clients who'd approved expensive upgrades that the tecchies said would result in blistering performance, only to find it reduced application latency, say, by about 5 milliseconds....and these were anoraks who couldn't understand how the average Joe could possible survive at home without a blade server rack and a network linking every room including the karzie and the shed...

I mean imagine what Bat would have to pay out for example if we all wanted a 50Mb connection to his server (wherever its hosted)....probably couldn't do it. And as Gav will probably admit, the ISPs tend to oversell their actual max capacity very significantly on the reasonable sensible assumption that not all their subscribers will be online at the same time doing massive downloads.

IMHO in most cases, unless you have several family users, buying 50Mb is like buying a Ferrari and wondering why it still takes five hours to get up the M6

bb speed or mis sell of it wass on beeb breakfast this morning.

feeling was misleading upto speeds, suggestting that a typical
speed, rather like a typical apr from a bank would be fairer.

further it was undefined how many customers could hope to get
the best speed though suggestion was at best 5%, this was
mainly aimed at the adsl market.

to be fair mine is slow compared to some of you, but it is FREE
so i'd have to pay an awful lot more to improve it....

its free from orange because at some point i had enough mobile
contract(s) with them or combine monthly spend to qualify for
free bb.

dont download much, mainly free progs as needed like avg or
open office, then go off and have a cuppa leaving download to
sort itself out, and coming from the era when it took a tape
drive to download a 3K game as long onto the old vic20 its
not that bad really.
