New Tin Tent

Hi all I'm looking to replace the old tin tent and have been offered an Elddis Jet Stream for £1500 its a 1994 and everything is working and has been serviced every year.
Will my T2 pull it OK I'll only tow about 2000 miles a year the rest of the time it will be static at the fishery where I'm a part time bailiff so could any body tell me if they are an OK van and any pit falls that you know of

how big is the caravan... how heavy..

mine is 22' long ans 1241kg fully loaded.

pulls no trouble at all.

I'ts 18ft zippy don't know the gvw yet got to go and have a look at it and get all the details I know its to big for just the Mrs and me realy but It has all the mod cons Shower Hot n Cold water blown hot air and a fire for heating and we can set up the bed and leave it and use the seperate seating area during the day

sounds good to me.

i cant see it beeing to heavy for the T2 to tug.. not at only 18ft

like the idea of a 4berth for just two.. very lazy... my kind of camping..

a mate of mine tows a swift challenger twin axle, and he reckons it tows it a dream, so i dont think you will have any problems,

and elddis are very good vans, provided it has been looked after and serviced.,

go for it, probably manage it on roof rack, ok not really.

BUT my t2 was good for our 1700kg spectrum t/a.

thats agood site zippy suggested, better now with correct url...

My vans nearly 8 mts and weighs in at 1650 kg, Mav tows with no probs at all.


Invest in a damp meter, it could save you a fortune ;O)

Havent looked up the spec of your van but I towed significant distances with a twin axle 1.6 (or is it 1.5 ? pageant Limousin) behind my 2.7T2. Well within limits all round and a very comfy tow

Must be honest Ive got a real soft spot for the "genuine" Eldis vans. They were built a very short distance form where Im sitting now.

Thank's for the reply's lads never thorght of going over it with a damp meter Mud Life and I use one for work so I'll take it with me. and it look's like the T2 will pull it no problem so we will go and invetigate

I sell caravans for a living so we check them for damp all the time.

FYI. readings of

0-15%,no cause for concern

15-20% may require further investigation,re check in 3 months

greater than 20% will identify areas requiring remedial work, early signs of water ingress

greater than 30%, structual damage may be occurring and deterioration is inevitable.

Over 40% start swimming ;O)


Check inside along all joints(front and rear top corners are prone to leaks) , under windows and around roof vents and flues.

take a look at my thread 'my big fat gypsy caravan' and you will see the sort of carvans i tow with a t2 all the time. You should have no problems!

if your using a damp meter be carefull of the cheap diy type ones that were made for testing damp primarily in house walls where accuracy is not as ctitical.

for a caravan the age and value you are thinking of a good visual check should suffice. check in the corners behind the front curtains and behind the cushions where the seam runs under the windows and inside cupboards etc.

though to be honest, i have yet to see a used caravan over 5 years old with no damp at all despite what anyone will tell you and i've looked at hundreds! an odd stain or soft spot on an oldish caravan isnt much to worry about just reseal the seams (properely) and it should be fine

Thanks for the readings Brian I hope it is ok my old Roller 1983 has been a great van but the fridge only runs on mains now and the cookers past it's best I've had it for 17 years so it don't owe me anything so anybody that want's it can have it when I get another one

Later in the year we have a caravan destruction derby at dover and vans are never about when you want one, so if its still about in September, we could use it, Rick
