well, i may be wrong, but all i did was empty some of my electrical contact cleaner into a little plastic drink bottle, cut thebottom off the bottle, and placed the MAF in that so that the wires were submerged. that was well before Christmas, and havent had any trouble since. doing it this way saved me scrubbing with cotton buds etc, as this leaves tiny bits of cotton on the wires, cant be good...

Contact cleaner I used was in an aerosol with a straw just like WD, all I did was give the thin wire a good squirt with the straw. Also cleaned the mesh with the same stuff but gave the mesh a buff up with a rag afterwards.

Not sure if brake cleaner is a little harsh. This is the stuff I've used http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=4153.
There is a very thin piece of wire runs through the air flow chamber, this is the bit that is so delicate. That servisol wont be wasted though, it's cracking stuff. If you have something with a noisy volume control that crackles when you go near it, sorted.
