terrano smells at speed!

Anyone noticed that, when goin at a certain 'high' speed, you start to smell a clutch kinda smell??

Nope and it don't sound right either. Feel your auto locking hubs at front to check that one isn't sticking and causing it to heat up. Also check your rear brakes aren't sticking on with the handbrake, mine did both those at different times.

so at no speed should it smell like that? its auto, its my first ever auto to so i dont know if that matters?

When you are still at home remove the centre caps from the front wheels and put in a safe place. Then drive as normal and then when stopped touch each hub at the front to see if they are hot because they shouldn't be hot. Rear brakes are a little harder, you'll have to safely jack it up at the back. Then with the hand brake released see if the rear wheels turn freely.

You can't rule out the front brakes sticking either.

Also if you have no idea about the transmission fluid's age it wont be a bad idea to change it. Not a bad idea to do the rest of the oils too inc rear diff but ensure you use correct types of oil. May be the car just needs a real good dose of servicing.

sounds like sticking breaks to me, probably the front pads....

My MX6 used to do it, what happens is the pad sticks slightly, so the faster you go, the more it heats up and smells, when you slow down, you will either notice the smoke, or the smell, or both...i fixed mine by simply having the pads changes and the calipers re greased, not sure if its a simialr type job on a mav/terrano though,,,,

worth a look...

my jeep used to do it too after i had been down the motorway!!! front pads sticking!!! and mine was due to old brake fluid it had gone like jelly in calapers and would not release the pads!!! mine got to the point ware drove back 80 miles on the hand brake so not to use the foot brake...... that was fun

worth checking how old the fluid is!!!

thanks for all the info everyone, ill use it to try and find out the problem, hopefully the brakes as im changing pads and shoes anyway
