Default British Army

Heard on the radio recently that 14% of new recruits to the British Army are from the Republic of Ireland, probably add a couple of percentage points if you include Northern Ireland. Irish Army are not recruiting so anyone who wants to be a soldier is now going to the British Army. There always was quite a few from the Republic who joined up but until recently their parents would only say they were working in England for fear of reprisals or death threats. Hope that's changed now with the numbers increasing. Seemingly, the Irish are good at fighting but usually among themselves

no we're not - want to fight about it!!!

seriously though. It is nice that attitudes are thawing but its taking over three generations for trust to start.

Alot of people have a stylised idea of Ireland in general and forget that great constitutional diversity of opinion exists, to greater and lesser extent throughout the entire island.

Its just a shame that people feel the need to kill for what is really only a constitutional issue.

Regards
Lee

Spot on ,I think since the constitutional claim to the North was changed through referendum a few years ago, it has gotten better. Long may it stay that way and continue improving. Pity that lads and girls have to go to the UK for a career in the Army, they really should be able to join up here. Still, as long as they do a good job I suppose it's better than the dole in Ireland. And as you said ,attitudes are thawing a bit. Next thing you know, they will be teaching the officer cadets how to speak Irish in Sandhurst
