Default Great Weekend Away

Been on my adventures again this weekend with those youngsters.

Had a minibus delivered to us Friday afternoon and set off up to Redmire Station House scout hostel in the Yorkshire Dale's. Was a bit on the chilly side but got unpacked and briefed the youngsters before hotdog supper. Got the kids off to bed and spent a few hours chewwing the fat in front of a real coal fire with the rest of the staff.
Took the kids up to Richmond Saturday morning and did the "Drummer Boy Walk" which is a short walk from Richmond Castle to Easby Abbey, legend has it a small boy was sent down a tunnel that is said to run between the two with a snare drum but sadly part way through the drumming stopped and he was never seen again. So plenty of tales to tell the kids and a shouting session on the echo stone facing the abbey, a bit of fun and leg pulling. Back to Richmond a wonder around the newly refurbished Green Howards museum where they have a mock up of the drummer boys uniform for the kids to try on. An interesting visit before a few more sites. Sadly that curtailed the activities due to heavy rain.
Got up this morning and took the kids for a wonder around Aysgarth Falls before a flying visit to Castle Bolton for a quick photo before going back to the house to change and packing. Then off to Catterick to take them to the swimming pool where we got the newbies through their basic swimming assessment and a couple of the older ones through intermediate. On to a chain pub for lunch and then back to the house to clean and load the vehicles. Dropped off the keys back at the Bolton Arms pub in Redmire village, wanted to take a few photos for my self as the village green was used as Darrowby Bus Stop in the old BBC series All Creatures Great and Small but sadly the snow was set in and wanted to get back through Leyburn to the A1. Got back to our HQ about 6 and spent half hour unloading and letting the kids clean the bus off.

A very busy tiring weekend but very enjoyable for us staff and the kids. Of course being bus driver I got perks, sweets galore from the kids. Have been asked to work next weekend too but decided to have a couple of weekends to myself. The kids behaved amazingly well the whole weekend and most of them came up to me and thanked me for the weekend.

I've had a nice cuppa and tea, off for a shower and then relax for a while before going to bed. Knackered but happy tonight. Just love having these dales pretty close by.

It was good fun but brought back memories of the laning trips in the same area with the previous owner of Bigbunnys truck. Great place even with poor weather. Kept seeing road signs saying beware tanks turning, I'd so love to come a cross a tank on those roads

Actually yes, Saturday evening when we were stuck inside we had a couple of games of battleships. Some of the kids have their operating certificate for the organisation so I was able to get them to do the teaching and supervision of the younger ones.

God I miss the ATC, some of the best nights of my life spent with them.

Fair play mate, the staff were invaluable to us for ensuring trips like this could take place and were great guys really even if they were mean to us from time to time

I've had a lot of CB play this weekend what with using it out in Shropshire with Elty on Saturday and then out on the hill near my Nans house where I used to live in Wednesbury tonight talking to some guys long distance around the midlands with my burner Amazing how far out you can get with the right conditions

Sounds like you had a bit of fun playing radio

Looking like I've got my work cut out for this summer too. Been down to our HQ this evening and had 9 D of E applications for Bronze level handed in to me, it's my first year totally in charge of this years groups. Got another few doing Silver level too. Can't wait it's going to be great fun. Wish I could do this for a living.
