Its the action of an open differential - try it sometime with the front end of a T2. Lock the hubs in and then jack up 1 wheel, rotate it and see how many wheel revs you have to do to get the prop to turn once fully round - then repeat with the rear but with both wheels off the ground. I've spent far too much of my life in scrap yards looking for lower ratio diffs......

I WAS IN 2ND LOW WITH CENTRE DIFF LOCKED ,HAD TO TAKE REAL FAST RUN AT IT AND BOUNCE TIGGER STYLE ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP.
TALKED TO TWO DIFF LOCK LADS IN DISCOS 200TDI ,THEY GOT UP NO PROBLEM ,BUT THEY USED 4TH LOW CENTRE DIFF LOCKED .
RELIED ON ENGINE TORQUE TO PREVENT WHEELS SLIPPING.
NOW THINKING OF AN ARB OR DETROIT REAR DIFF LOCK
THE OFF ROAD GUYS JUST WELD THE REAR DIFF UP.

Only one lad from Difflock on the trip Ian and that was Barny in the Pickup - other lads were all Humber-Yorks 4x4 Response and will have been the Tiffany Twins, Steven and Robert.

Strange how everyone approaches it differently, I used 1st Low up there with minimal throttle and just let it walk its way up on its own. Not sure why Robert and Steven chose that approach, if you're going to use 4L you may as well use 1H or 2H.

Default 4 wheel drive

HI SIMON .
IT GOT ME A BIT PUZZLED THEM USING 4TH LOW ,I DIDNT TRY IT BUT I THINK MINE WOULD HAVE STALLED IF I HAD TRIED IT ,I CAN SEE THE LOGIC USING 4TH LOW WOULD HAVE HELPED STOP WHEELS SPINNING.
rgds.iandouglas
ps. would their 200tdi have same gear box /final drive ratio as my 300tdi

it's all to do with the sun and planet gears in the crown wheel casing

Default Diffs

Mate of mine has a 300TDi, and 2 200 TDi Discos - they will quite easily just spin when one side is bogged down - as other posts say, the centre diff lock will force a 50/50 torque split front & rear, but both axles have open diffs, allowing one wheel on each to spin freely. Put a Disco in a shitty ditch off the edge of a tarmac road & you'll have a hell of a job to get it out.
Most interesting pub fact of the day: I picked up a 2002 Disco TD5 for a mate yesterday. An ES model - air suspension, traction control, hill descent, electric leather seats, CD changer, climate, etc, etc, but NO centre diff lock - it was a £260 option on all Discos of that age!!! That means all three diffs are free. The traction control may help, but I would have thought that's a ridiculous backward step.

As TRSR said earlier just used 1st low box and let car take itself, was surprised that Ian struggled in disco,as rocks were dry just deep rutted ground where they had washed away. One of the best boneshaking rides jj has been on sat in passenger seat.
