Ive seen the yellow ones with 3 cameras in road works that are meant to be average. Two sections one is south of sheffield and one section around wakefield. We also have the smart motorway along the m62 that has standard gatzos on gantries above each lane, the highways agency vary the speed and the cameras get you but often people forget the speed limit is 70 mph and the cameras will revert to this speed limit. Drivers then charge through at great speed because the signs are not flashing up or what ever and get a ticket and complain

55 mph max for me now, dont want to push much more with muds on, plus cheaper on fuel to find a lorry to sit behind!

M1 average speed cameras
The ones on the M1 near junction 26 towards A610 have been in place for a few years now.
When the overhead gantry matrix displays any speed limit number below 70 mph the cameras work on your average speed recorded via the ANPR system between any pair of cameras including entry and exit ones at the junctions as well as on the straight bits just like the ones on the M62. When there is no reduced speed limit displayed i.e. its the usual default 70 mph then I understand the cameras do not operate. I have noticed that everyone carries on at 80-90 mph when this is the case I have certainly done 80 mph regularly and had no ticket. Its the nagging doubt that keeps my speed sensible.LOL I was told many years ago that the reason they switch them off when its the normal 70 limit is because of the sheer number of speeders completely overwhelm the prosecution system. In the G.M.P. area some 20 years ago cameras on the Motorway they were recording over 10,000 speeding vehicles an hour so in a weekend it was producing in excess of 150,000 potential offences. They settled for setting the parameters at 95 m.p.h and over ! Technology and the ticket system has improved since then. This information was 'common knowledge' when I had a 12 month spell in prosecutions at Alfreton Division that used to proces all the MI offences from Junction 30 down to Juction 24 at the local court despite the road being in 3 different counties and multiple Magistrates Courts areas. Alfreton prosecutions offices was demolished (old MoD buildings) its is now a huge Tesco and Afreton Magistrates Court has been closed for many years. |

ANPS
Happy days I worked at Alfreton Police Station (ANPS) from my promotion to sergeant in December 1985 until April 1987.
Unfortunately I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma the following month so spent a year in prosecutions from September 1987 until October 1988 on light duties whilst undergoing gruelling chemotherapy. After a brief relapse in 1990 when I had more treatment I fully recovered now off the annual watch list as I have been symptom free for over 20 years. God bless the NHS. I ended up doing another year in prosecutions from 1990-1991 tis time working in Crown Court Support at Ripley HQ and Chesterfield HQ at New Beetwell Street. |

Personally, I think all cars and non HGV's should travel at a min 60 mph on the motorway. |

Sitting close to the back end of trucks is asking for problems, your in a blind spot for the driver and if he has to brake hard, you are in the rear end mate. |
