Default Powder Coating

Does anyone know anything about powder coating? I picked up a pair of roof rails for the truck. Wondering about having them coated maybe silver. Question is what sort of cost and do I have to remove the black paint thats on them?

Could have got that done. You will need to remove all the paint first. Personally I wouldn't bother powder coating isn't that good just flat the paint off and use aerosol

Mat of mine brought some for his Pajero and took the black paint off, flatted it back to metal and then had them dipped (Anodised) they are the shiniest matte silver I've ever seen

Main problem with powder coating is getting the cure time and temps right.
A lot of these back street places just set the temp to what the manufacturer specifies and that's it.
It's the temperature of the metal not the air temp that gives you correct cure.
Also as with everything the price of the powder plays a vital role and that the correct type of powder is used for the conditions the finished product will be used in.
Could waffle on forever but been doing what I do for a living successfully for 25 years.
Please feel free to ask me anything

Is powder coating harder wearing than paint?
Do I have to remove every trace of original paint or just rub it down.

You'll be best off getting it all of, I used a sand blaster back at honda for a motorcycle rack, was amazing fun at the same time

Took it back to bare metal

I'm sure the bars are alloy so if you choose to paint them you'll need etch primer otherwise the paint will peel of easily as normal primer won't grip alloy
