Hi :) WHEELS & TYRES PROBLEM!! Can anyone help me??
Hey Guys & Girls! Im new and i need some advice!
I bought my Terrano Mk3 (2003) 2.7dti last year and i LOVE it! I had a maverick before but it was petrol so could not afford to run it but this 4x4 is great. I cant afford a landy, but this gives you the comfort of a car, crossed with the ruggedness of a real 4x4. We are small time farmers so it has to earn its keep!! Anyway, everything is great apart from on full lock (both directions) the car 'pushes itself' round the corner. With a clunk the whole front of the car 'jumps' either forward or backwards. Its very strange. Ive had it up on ramps in two different standard garages and at an HGV mechanics who have all looked at everything....and its all fine!! Nothing is mechanically out of place or broken. The car drives absolutely fine, straight & true with no pull either way. Its running on 16" alloys with 275/30 tyres on. It really is just when going very slowly on full lock. All i can think or any mechanic can think is the wheel or tyre sizes are wrong. I have been to see two different '03' plate terranos. One had the same size wheels & tyres, one had same wheels, different tyres. Has anyone experienced this before?? SHould i try smaller rims or thinner tyres?? There seems to be a lot of 15" terrano wheels around...should i be having them on instead?! I thank you in advance and look forward to you help, and future on this forum. Simon |

Are you sure about that tyre size 275/30 r16 sound like something off a sports car.

If it jumps forward on lock, it sounds like diff issues

Firstly welcome aboard and when we've helped you sort out what's going on will it be worth the tanner membership? Has been for us.
We're you running in 4wd on a hard surface? Big no no, needs to be run on slippery surfaces to allow wheels to spin slightly. Secondly, could be your limited slip diff causing problems. Chances are it needs oil changing but only use proper LSD Oil not gear oil. Thirdly try greasing the 4 steering stops, they grind like hell on full lock. |

Wrong oil in rear diff sprung to mind or yeah - steering stops. They just need lube on the front wheels. Little metal "nipples"

Start cheap first, grease the steering stops with loads of grease and make sure your CV boots are jammed of the stuff as well and try again. Do you know if it has auto or manual front hubs?

Welcome mate, as makitfit says more info, but LSD probs come to mind as do CVJ's, the front diff is not LS but it might have suffered water ingress/no oil, as I think your model has fixed hubs so check oil level and condition here first, Rick

Wow you all certainly sound like you know your stuff!!
To answer your questions.... Car is in 2WD (rear) when this happens so it kind of pushes itself forward into the corner then 'clunk....clunk...' if that makes any sense! The wheels jump! When i did it infornt of the mechanic he could see the entire wheels move then 'clunk' back again, like when you over tighten a bottle top and it snaps round. ...shall i try it in 4WD and see if its the same?? Car has automatic front hubs and cncfabs! Your right, im not running on slicks.. im on 235/70 R16's I only ever use the 4wd system once traction is lost and NEVER go above 10-20 mph when in 4wd. Like i say its not causing me any problems whatsoever normally, id just like to sort it at some point, gets abit embarrasing in the supermarket carpark!! and jims-terrano...YES i shall defo be paying the membership, ive been looking for a decent forum for ages!! I shall ensure i start basic and get the CV's and steering stops checked asap...Any other ideas? |

Hi Simon, defo steering stops which are two on each front hub assembly. If you are not sure about it's history then from what you are saying rear diff oil and even if this isn't the cause it will be a good idea anyway. Best of luck and let us know how you get on.

Hi and welcome. Greased steering stops and oils changed. Then I bet it'll be transformed.

If not steering stops, then one of the relay rod ball joints is paggered.

Can you get a video of this happening, steering stops shouldn't make the wheels jump, I wouldn't have thought.
