Tanking up for the new year

Hi all, just seen the last of the Glenfiddich so started the Glenlivet, but how many of you have sampled the pure delights of the Aberfeldy, a scotch to die for, that is to be held in reserve for later in the new year, and I still have a Laphroaig, probably the most Oak tasting of all, oooooh luverly, hick happy new year all, see you later, much later, Rick

On standby so can't drink til Friday I have never got into whisky, I hate the taste of the stuff .

Last time I was on Whisky I had Glen Morangie and it was very very cheap in the mess and I ended up in a mess

I am with you firebobby never developed the pallet for whisky or spirits of any kind.

I seem to manage OK with Beer, Lager & Red Wine to hit the spot. LOL

Briggie, I am with you on that one, these lighter coloured "Highland" whiskies are the ones I prefer.
My son prefers the Islay whiskies, darker, deeper, stronger taste, some can also be confused with creosote

However, it's odd that I acquire the taste when he opens his bottles, rather than mine.

I know he has paid £50+ for some bottles
The Irish whiskies are good too. Bush mills malts, brilliant. similar to Highland malts.

Then there is the English whisky, made on the Borders of Norfolk.
Expensive for what appears to be a peaty malt, distilled from remotely sourced smoked malted barley.

The taste is similar to a young immature Islay.
That's because they sell them when they legally can, after so many years, and don't lay much down for later. They don't know what a 20 year old english whisky tastes like... It has all been sold and drunk.
So when travelling to Norfolk on the A14, A11 drop into St Georges Distillery.
They do a tour, small cost, free coffee at start then a couple of samples, or more if you really can't make your mind up... hic.. My wife can't drink whisky, so more for me... then she drove home...
Prepare to spend £40 per bottle though.

There is also a welsh whisky, similar in colour to highland malts, but more of a novelty than for serious malt drinkers, in my opinion.

don't get me wrong I like a red as well, rather partial to a nice Nuit St George, or Cotes Du Rhone especially Chateau Neuf Du Pape, and as for the Clarets, I spent months down there sampling very many, silly thing is I have also sampled on many occasions the stupid money stuff, like hundreds of £s per bottle and all I can say is you can keep it, but I am not a beer guy, each to his own and I wish you all a very happy and contented 2014, regards Rick
