Exclamation DC motor speed controller wanted

does anyone here know where i could get a speed controller for a DC motor? im building a little generator project and a need to bring the speed of the motor up gradually so the belt going to the T2 alternator doesn't slip....if you know what i mean

the motor im using is a 14.4v drill motor but i'll be using a 12v lead acid battery you find in alarm panels

also, does anyone know the rpm that a terrano diesel alternators needs to be spinning at to turn out the excitation lamp and start generating a charge?

Are you driving the drill motor and producing power that way?

Could you use a speed controller from a drill to do the job?

Not sure 10amps will be enough, if I was you, I would try it first with an electric drill, and see if you have enough torque and speed to drive the alternator under load.

The thing is, the alternator has a built in regulator, allowing it to output the same voltage regardless of how fast the engine is running, so I do not understand why you need to vary the speed of the drive motor, you would just be better starting the engine with no load on the alternator, then switching the load on once it is up to speed.

You could look for an old electric variable speed drill, and use the controller out of that.

I do have another question...

If you have a charged 12v battery to run the motor, why do you need to generate 12v?

cheers, yeah, the drill the motor came out had a burnt out controller, hence the reason the drill was scraped, i thought a controller would be good as if the motor is just powered directly off the battery, itll wear the belts as it'll be spinning a lot until the alt catches up on the motor, thus creating wear on the drive belt

idea: a bit of a tangent but try searching 'dynamo' ike an altenator but with a DC output.

back on track:have you considered the gearing? the pulley sizes will make a huge difference to the relative rotation speeds!

strange one this!! you have a 12 v battery to drive a 14.4 volt drill that will drive a T2 alternator with slipping belts, and you want a controller to limit the slip, and just what are you going to do with the alternator output? charge the battery running the drill? perpetual motion comes to mind, Rick

Why oh why are you doing this

Using 12 volts to drive a motor to drive a generator to charge a 12 volt battery

Are you trying to get more out than you are putting in?

If you could do that you will be a millionaire overnight, and the oil industry would collapse too.

I am totally confused

I noticed the first post, checked the date and since it wasn't April 1st, I thought I would wait a while before putting my two pennyworth in.

Have I missed something

Best regards, Rustic
