So he became very profficient at parking, drive through on car parks etc, don't parallel park, and never get too close to the vehicle in front. Park on a hill so you can roll back etc. So you should be able to do a journey without using reverse. Maybe we all should try it, and see how far we get. It's more difficult than we think, but with care you should be ok. 2 tonnes is not a weight that one person alone should try to push. Good luck, best regards, Rustic

Loss of reverse
I would start with checking the mechanical link between the lever and the gearbox. Its all too easy to assume the worse and that the gearbox has failed internally.
I am pretty sure that our auto boxes are the early type that rely mainly on a fluid mechanics and pressure valve system not like the later gearxoxes that have electric solenoids to change gear. I would start by checking the movement from car gearshift to where it mechanically moves a lever on the gearbox casing. It only needs a circlip to half break or a rod link to become sloppy for it to simply not engage reverse. |

just to throw a metaphorical spanner into the mix ..... it wont always go into reverse after driving forward , but when it does , it jerks and has loads of power ... ie not slipping
