I would advise though that you also keep a check on water. Mine uses a good bit of water and has since I got it. Truck runs fine and there is no indication of a head gasket problem. Initially heavy water use was due to water pump going (which seems to be common enough but thankfully not a big deal to change), then thermostat went (common enough also and again an easy fix). I know the gasket is missing from the thermostat housing and a copper washer missing from a water pipe connector so water may be escaping at these points. In any case, my point is keep a frequent eye on the water level in the expansion bottle at least initially until you know the waterworks are sound. Would suggest regular fuel filter changes, at least every 12,000 miles, as crud does seem to build up and can give odd running problems. On the grasshopper ticking noise, check your tyres for any stones stuck between tyre threads or any nails in the tyres. They would sound like that. |

the grasshopper ticking noise could well be bent/damaged viscous fan blades catching on something

id be expecting no more than 33 tops on a long run, round town it will drop. These are heavy cars and old engines but for the money/age etc, they are no better or worse than any other 4x4 in my opinion, certainly better than Fronteras thats for sure! I wouldnt let it put you off though, its very hard to find better these days unless you buy a small diesel car or something.
as Peter says, ticking sound may well be the fan perhaps, but get the bearing checked anyway, but also consider a stone stuck in the tyres, happens to me all the time-gravel driveway! |

just checked wheel bearings ad the back are ok but the front two have some play in i would say a few mill. is it normal to have some play in the front two with the free wheeling hubs? |
