This post brings back memories...
Supercar with Mike Mercury and Mitch Top Cat Watch with Mother Tales of the Riverbank Muffin the mule Bill and Ben Blue Peter with Valerie Singleton, Chris ? and later John Noakes.... The Goodies Dr Who with William Hartnell Dixon of Dock Green The Lone Ranger Crackerjack Ten Town Whirley birds Skippy I love Lucy Coronation Street Space Patrol, I barely recall this but all I remember is " Gamma rays on, betta waves on", just before this shiny bottle top of a silver space ship took off. In my early days there were only 2 channels and we rented the TV from "Red Arrow" then I remember them converting the set to include BBC2, this was on UHF not VHF that the original 2 were on. There was a huge handle on the side that went clunk and you had to have 2 aerials, a H shaped aerial for VHF and the conventional aerial for UHF. Black and white of course, and the white dot in the centre of the screen when you turned it off. Just before the National anthem came on at 11:00pm. I could list dozens more....

Old TV
When I first watched TV there was only BBC 1 and I remember stuff like.
Crackerjack. Fabian of the Yard Rawhide The Lone Ranger Bill and Ben the Flowerpot men & Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed. Torchy the battery boy etc ITV came a year or two later. All in Black & White many years later came colour but my Parents could not afford the licence fee for colour or the sets so it was 1970 before we had Top of the Pops in colour ! |

I have fond memories of:
Captain Scarlet Thunderbirds Joe 90 Stingray The Herb Garden Trumpton Chigley Camberwick Green The Clangers Also remember watching comedy stuff with my dad: The Goodies Monty Python Dave Allen My mum never got the comedy stuff but did like Star Trek and westerns - I must've seen every Audie Murphy movie going. Also The Persuaders and The Saint. As a family I remember we watched loads of natural history programmes (David Attenborough, Jacques Cousteau) I also remember staying up late on Fridays to watch the horror movies - all the Hammer stuff was great and Peter Cushing was my hero! I recall Robinson Crusoe and The Flashing Blade as being part of the Saturday TV viewing, and I remember going to "The Pictures" with my uncle on Saturday mornings and seeing episodes of Flash Gordon (Larry "Buster" Crabbe), amongst other things. Oh and wasn't Marine Boy the one with some sort of special chewing gum to allow him to breather underwater? |
