As a novice try to stick to around 85 to 90% of the kerbweight of the car.

The caravan you mention will be way under that so no probs

Hi Spiderpig
Last winter I towed a big 1700kg single axle German Hobby with my '96 2.7 LWB (no intercooler) T2. It performed well even up mountain roads in Spain. So your T2 will handle a 1150 kg van no probs - it'll need judicious gear selection but lack of power will not be a major issue.
Regards CL
