I've got a Nikon D60 DSLR which cost around £300 when new a couple of years ago - a cracking camera, and I would have thought obtainable used for around your maximum budget, try a look on eBay - some photographers are notorious for wanting more and better features, so good s/h cameras come up all the time - in fact this Nikon, which the wife bought me for Christmas, is the only camera we have bought new for many years, both of our pocket cameras, and those of our grandchildren bought last year, have been used ones bought from eBay. The way I look at it, by buying used you get a better camera than if you spent the same sort of money on a new one.

i was in the same situation, i eventually bought the pentax k-x with 2 lenses,

first thing i done was gather all my old camera's and anything else i did not want and sold them on fleabay which increased my budget and now own a dslr.

i owned 2 fuji camera's in my time and i thought they were great bridge camera's until i took a photo with the dslr and realized i wasted so many years taken average photo's.

if you are still on a tight budget a friend had a Panasonic Lumix camera and was impressed as a bridge camera.

As a photographer i have to say not all shots taken with a bridge camera are bad, they just aren't very good for fast moving shots as you always have a slight delay. The best bridge camera I have come across is one i actually own its the olympus sp560uz and i used it to take the pic attatched, maybe i am biased though as all my equipment is olympus even down the the lenses i use lol however saying this, you still cant beat a good dslr, i highly recommend the olympus e420 as a beginners dslr as they are easy to understand and use and if you can find one of these in your budget range snap it up they are well worth the money and extremely hard wearing, i still have my e420 and use it when `out n about` in the car.
