End of a good run
My Maverick is on its way out
MOT station say not worth the cost of fixing the gearbox It has a current MOT, got it 15/06/2021 look it up M986 YNH Gearbox jumps out of gear, whines in 3rd all in, a replacement with clutch and labour in the region of a grand, more than I paid for it But it has been good to me, not cost much in the 10 years or so I have had it Hopefully one of you guys will be able to make use of it Location near Southend Essex I will continue to use it until I find a replacement Comments please |

When you say jumps out of gear, can you hold it in with ease or is it difficult, does the clutch slip? put it in 4th hand brake on rev it to limit, drop clutch, does it stall or run on? Rick

Whilst I can’t comment on the gearbox issue, if she has been good to you then what is a £1000? To buy a replacement for her will cost you more.
Looking at your MOT history you have a few bits of welding to do and some brake pipe to replace. Is it lots of welding that is needed? It is easy for a garage to say if it is worth fixing or not but only you can determine the value of the car to you. I am spending just shy of £3000 on my 1998 Patrol. Is it worth it in the economic sense? No not at all but she is worth it to me. I love my SWB Patrol and hope to run her for another 10 years. |

Easy to hold stick to stop it jumping out
Not tried the stall thing yet, will try later, but do not think the hand brake will hold it I have had it tested at the same MOT shop since I bought it Body not showing normal moth holes MOT shop says lots of rust underneath but chassis OK Last edited by kitchenman; 16-06-2021 at 12:17. 4th gear, hand brake on, 3K revs, drop clutch, lurches forward a bit, crunch, engine stops.
Won't do much more than 3K revs, mini filter needs a clean, ever since I tried veg oil it has needed doing every few K miles, filter blocked with what looks like Vaseline I added clutch to estimate in case I needed one I have tried to get quotes for a courier to get a replacement box to me, so far no luck I would like to keep the mav but even if I get a second hand box fitted the gearbox specialist say it may be no better than the one I have, so 1K down the swannie for nothing, I am a devotee of Murphy Best prices so far, wrecker recommended by group around £300 for box, £450 for labour [in/out, price was 2 years ago] new clutch £150 [if I need one], so not far short of a grand, plus getting box to the gearbox specialist in Canvey Island MOT garage says a mondeo estate would set me back around £1,500, I do not need 7 seats nor a 4x4, [just a car big enough to hold my worktop fitting tools] he thinks one of them would see me out, I am 82 and counting |

tell me more about the easy fix Jumping out of 1st is new, about a month or two, jumps out on take off, second try stays in Jumping out of second on overrun has been there for years getting down into 2nd on the move almost impossible, been like that a year or two, either grateing or feels like stick is up against a stop. pumping clutch while fulling back on stick sometime gets 2nd, but by then it is crawling I would like to keep it but the transmission shop said it is on its last legs that was early 2020 I think, may have been 2019, I do not do much mileage about 1,000 a year according to the MOT cert 2020, 137,151 2019, 136,356, 2018 135,326. When we spoke on phone about it was soon after seeing the transmission guy, I think I messaged you about it the same time I have worked on cars most of my life so should be able to handle the indent problem I have a copy of the PDF manual somewhere, I think the link to the download fell over a year or two ago, I have not looked to see if it is fixed Hopefully you have the answer for me and Mav and me can spend some more years together Rick I just looked up messages, we were messaging Decender 2019 Last edited by kitchenman; 16-06-2021 at 21:24.
