Apparently there is huge television coverage of 22 over paid drama queens chasing an air filled bag of leather around a field and people are actually watching it and cheering

Very good point very well put I have no interest in football however I don't think they are over paid, surely they are only paid as much as the market will stand. As an example I wouldn't be very good at chasing the leather bag around nor would I be any good at falling over pretending that you kicked me in the leg therefore no one is going to pay to watch me so I would be unable to command any pay at all.
