Default Turbo differences in t2's

Stripping my spare 98 2.7 tdi engine down this eve I noticed it's turbo is water cooled like most turbos. But when comparing it to my 2002 2.7 tdi that one has no water Cooling. . Now I know if you can get charge temps down you get more power and the 98 engine used to be loads quicker than my 2002. So you guys with 98 models with round head lights do you have water cooled turbos or not as wondering if this has been modded or just the usual money saving economy when we got to 2001 onwards model

Yes deffo water cooled to 98 (latest motor I have) just as likely the later ones are not as normal cost cutting on behalf of Nissan, but I do have to say, on the ones I have stripped out the very small water pipe was pretty well blocked, Rick

aggressive off road tyres on wheels so just swap.
Aim to get stuck and be completely self sufficient in extraction, love getting muddy, 2ft deep is good but rare.

While you have the engine out it will be very worth pulling the water pipes to the turbo and giving them a clean out, but have to say that the water cooling is nothing to do with performance gain, more to do with longer turbo life ie keeping the bearings cooler, Rick

Are you still having temperature issues when towing?

Water cooling to turbo will make absolutely no difference to performance, the very small water flow is nothing compared to the vast amount of air that is passing, the intercooler is the item that fails, it should be radiator sized in front of your engine cooling rad, now that is a worth while mod, Rick

I did blow through them and seems nice and clear. I had a reciept from nissan that this was a new full engine from them in 2014 at 3500 quid and checking history it's done 5k miles since then hense why I'm gonna stick it in mine. As mine has a few issues. But this 98 went like poo of a stick and couldn't all be down to it being swb!

The 98 turbo gets water feed from a pipe under thermostat housing above water pump and goes to rear of the block near bell housing. My 2002 has non of that
