Scrap prices are dire at the moment, 12 months ago I weighed in under a tonne and got £80!

On the up side, getting a lot less agro locally from certain wheeled members of a certain emerald isle.

Every cloud...

...and all that.

loads of work sorting scrap today, mulling over the issue of a petrol Ali head, is it worth removing all the ferrous metal to make it clean Ali which at 10 kg will make £4 or leave in in which = £1 need to find a quick method of removing valve guides and seats, best so far is mini disk cutter on seats and heat head by fire and drift guides out, all too slow, plus cost of disk, I do have a fire basket made of scaffold putlocks (5ft tubes) and it gets hot enough to melt Ali but containing it is the problem, have done it with batteries for lead but Ali is a bit higher temperature, any suggestions, I do have some 45 gallon drums but doubt if cut in half they will stand the strain, ,,,,,, -5C here at the mo by the way, Rick

I have never thought it was worth the effort but I suppose I never have enough ali. To be honest I don't usually separate heavy from light iron either when scrap prices are down our local scrap yard was always very fair with price for mixed.

the scrap industry needs some understanding, a copper cylinder for instance goes in as brazery cos it is contaminated with the brazing on the seams, in the past it has been worthwhile taking tin sheers to them and cutting it out, pure copper is much higher than mixed, as with brass, so pure copper in one bin, brass in another and mixed in another, best to do it as you get it then you do not notice the time involved, but of course at the end of a working day this rarely happens, Rick
