P0217 Code
Hello I'm new to this site and was wondering if anyone can help me?
I drive a 2004 Terrano which has the EML on and when I plug my OBD reader in comes up with the code P0217 and says Engine Coolant Over Temperature Condition. I've changed both the temperature sensors and the antii-freeze. Does anyone have any other ideas what it could be? |

Also check your connections on your sensors.I had the same problem.

Yer I've changed the thermoset, and the temperature needle sit in the middle of the gauge as normal?

I don't have much faith in my temperature gauge. In a straight line, it sits below half way. On windy roads, it moves from sub zero to half way as if it is a brain damaged weeble. Once I'm in a straight line, it sorts itself out.
If I see steam/smoke/flames, I'll stop and investigate. |

As you are aware there are two temperature sensors fitted, one is for the instrument meter and the other is for the ECU.
The two sensors are in no way interconnected, other than by the coolant. The only way an over temperature DTC can be logged is from the ECU thermistor/sensor, the gauge can do whatever it likes, it will have no bearing on the DTC logged. As these sensors are NTC thermistors the resistance will decrease with rising temperature, so a bad connection is not probable, however a short to ground on the thermistor wiring for the ECU could be consistent with with your problem.

I would have a careful look at the wiring from the sensors to see if you have a broken wire or one that has rubbed through it's casing
