Bye bye Ark Royal
Sad to see another great ship leaving service, ironically 30 years to the
season since the previous carrier bearing the name made its last trip to the scrappy. Suppose atleast can still look forward to these new super carriers which will be atleast as big as the earlier AR, big enough for non vtol aircraft. Funny how things go full circle. Oh and the £7B saved by letting AR go is then available to bail out Ireland, seems a fair swap for Louis Walsh?

Fill ya boot's Argies It's another 10 years before we get another carrier. One thing for sure sharing a carrier just wont work if we have to go back to the south atlantic. Jim |

surely and according to the great wiki!
we still have Illustrious, and to a lesser extent Ocean which I reckon could manage pure vtol if need be, afterall Atlantic Conveyor deputised in a similiar role in the Falklands conflict, sorry WAR.

fair enough, but this is an article about crew of AR, who will be joining Illustrious?
http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.u...the.6639051.jp which was certainly a carrier last night on wiki. suspect some folks are not letting the truth get in the way of a good story...

AR has strong links with my region, sadly missed series of articles they've
run on each evening local news as been at work, perhaps on iplayer? http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/newshome...ion.6612922.jp discussed MOD debating whether to scrap Illustrious or Ocean, as former would leave them carrier-less. back to nostalga, never been on a carrier, though, did board a nuclear sub and destroyers at plymouth navy day in 1980, then was when saw the old AR, moored up river in the Tamar ready for towing to scrapping. Hell from the harbour tour boat was like looking up at sky scraper as we bobbed under the extended flight deck. My parents explored sister Eagle years before that at a navy day with lasting memories of size of flight deck from top side! Few years ago saw presume Invincible, moth balled in Pompy before decision made to remove from reserve fleet. Looked good, biggest thing there but not on scale of older or hopefully these new Queen Elizabeth class monsters.
