New here and looking for advice

Ok so here goes, Ive been looking for a new vehicle for a while and have decided on a teranno for many reasons it seems ideal.
The main advice i am seeking is are there any specific things to look out for when buying a terrano that could really bite me in the backside just down the road.
All advice will be welcome and greatly appreciated.

What age vehicle are you after and will it be petrol or diesel?
These will be factors due to model changes etc etc

I have finally found a terrano that looks good its a 2.7, 2002 02, S model, 52000miles.
Any advice would be really appreciated thanks again.

Best advice I can give is to give it a good service with correct fluids when you get it. A good dose of wax oil wont go a miss either. Oh and don't forget to post some photo's of your new pride n joy

what to look for !!

firstly, make sure the MIL light works, and if possible, ask them if there are any codes showing (i believe for that year you need a reader).

as Jim says, ALL fluids checked, especially diff, if car feels skittish at the rear, could be diff problem. Check gears, shouldnt be any whining or smells, so try and give it a test drive under LOAD, i.e. up hill giving it some welly. As you do this, pay attention to any smells or heat from the gearbox, and check the passenger side mirror for plumes of smoke-shouldnt be any on a car that age and mileage (there isnt on mine)

make sure all the dash bulbs work-do able, but a pain to change. Engine bay, check all the cables are good, and check for worn or rusty cables near the inner wings. Check the starter, car should start immediately prettyy much, starter can be seen easily drivers side, just follow the oil dip stick down and its there....

check the inner wings for rust, you have to look right in and up towards the shocks at the front, and at the rear, check around the seat belt mounts-all common failures. Check the front and rear sills (outer sills).

Check the drivers door doesnt drop as you open it.

er...not much realy with these cars to be honest, im being quite picky!!

oh yeah, check the 4wd works lol!! find some gravel, ensure the 4wd engages and works and drives at some speed (up to 20mph i think). I find these cars generally very quiet for a 4x4, so pay a lot of attention to any noises you hear. The engines tend to sound like sewing machines, but are very quiet at motorway speeds.

tyres, definately check for inner tyre wear. you can easily see all the linkages underneath, so, get somethign to rest on and stick your head under that car, at the front, look for oil, thats where the sump and filter is and there is a large metal guard, so pay attention to that (can also see through engine bay passenger side.

as its a 2.7 TDi, check the I/C, pipes and the injectors the I/C covers. Front is most important as it has a sensor on it, so check the wires there, get atorch and shine into the injector area, looking for any wetness. you can see each injector through various gaps, the one at the back is more common for leaks as its often not tight enough.

exhaust seems to be common on these, so check the rear mounts are ok, and if you can, the middle one (you have to get right under, also while you are there, check the brake and fuel pipes that run under the drivers side sill, very exposed as you would expect.

anyway, im going to leave it at that as its obvious stuff, these cars really are pretty tough, and I have found its generally the electrics that let them down, not the mechanics, and even then not that often...

Check the mileage is correct as common for dash 2fail and new dash from Nissan with mileage rest to zero so check all mots. and history.

Thanks for all the replies and thans for the check list clivvy, Ive seen the DVLA print out of the mot's and the milage looks good, I also checked out the advisories from the last MOT and they had been fixed / repalced.
