General info to help me decide

I've been offered a K reg Maverick at a very good price but I don't have a clue about thems other than by looking on Wikipedia.

I've currently got a diesel Mitsi Mk2 Pajero 2.5 and a very rare petrol Mitsi J26Jeep so please excuse my ignorance about these Fords/Nissans.

I would use it mainly on road but as I work on a number of estates the occassional light work on grassland would be required. I won't be pulling any heavy trailers, etc.

Any help about parts, insurance, reliability, strengths and weaknesses would be much appreciated to help me decide whether to get the Maverick and get rid of the Pajero.

HI Bernard.

if you alreay own 4x4's, your half way there. The Mavericks/terranos are pretty straight forward. You dont need advice checking gearbox/4x4, and the engine is very robust. Look for coolant leak at the front of the head, bubbling in the expansion tank, look for smoke-colour is important. power wise if sluggish, check the banjo filter in the pump. check the air filter-these cars are quite sensitive if the filte risnt right. the oil filters can sometimes not fit right, have a look, easy to see, they weep oil if not dealed. Fuel filter an easy one, again, cheap filters dont fit right and let air in, check its tight but not too tight (or youll struggle to get it off)

worn bushes, drop links and front shocks common, check for rust under the front wheel arches towards the cabin, hard to see but it sets in where the mud gets stuck, same at the back.

sills - again common at the back near the rear arch.

thats about it, everything else is no different to any other car.

Many thanks for such a quick, friendly and helpful reply.
I'm going to take your list and tick them off then decide what to do.

I've had a look on the Milners web site and the common parts are about the same cost as those for the Pajero and the insurance quotes aren't making my wallet beg for mercy.

I'll keep you posted and send my £10 subscription through if I go ahead,

I used the check list and decided to go for it.

Apart from requiring 2 tyres and a rear offside light that needs wiring properly
it looks good to go.
When it was first fired up there was a drop of oil that burnt off but that stopped after a few minutes and was, we think, caused by a slight spillage when it was last topped up.

Drove it back home over 40 miles last night and was impressed it certainly has more go than my old 2.5 Pajero!

Haven't read the replys

I would stay with the Mitsy BUT the Nissan 2.7td / 2.7tdi are far superior with regards to servicing & life span so it depends on how many miles ya going to do & what creature comforts you like

I agree the shogun is a better machine to drive my dads had two and they are way better to drive than the terrano the seats in the terrano are awful aswell.

well , ive had a shogun .... 2.8 intercooler turbo ...yep was very fast and comfy , untill the head gasket went ... not a simple or cheap repair ...... strange thing is , the head gasket went on my mistral . instead of having to skim the head and look for a warped head etc , was a relatively simple replacement because the head is cast iron instead of alloy

I agree regarding comments on the Pajero 2.5 v Maverick 2.4 as sane people would view them.

However (are you sitting comfortably?) the Pajero was bought in a rush as my Jeep had blown it's Head Gasket 2 weeks after spending hard earned dosh on getting it through the MOT. There are only 3 of these outside of Japan which means I source my oparts from another owner who lives in Kyoto.

So with a couple of brass farthings I needed another 4x4 quick.
£950 was parted with for the Pajero. I then has a nice guy at POCUK check why the steering was so light when Lo ratio was selected. No front diff/prop

I'd bought another unique Mitsubishi this time a 4x2 (which is why it's called Woody).

So having now earned enough to consider the options and with icy roads comming it seemed to make more sense to get a 4x4 with 12 months Tax & MOT for less than £800 than spend even more getting the Pajero fixed, MOT'd Taxed and the mysterious oil leek sorted.

As for comfort -my 1975 Mitsi J26 Jeep has bench seats and canvas top, a heater which emits less warmth than you'd get from rubbing a troop of boy scouts together and I used that every day for 2 winters. (I'm a freelance gardener working up in The Cotswolds).

Top speed in the Jeep and Patero are about 60 - 65mph. So the Maverick positively makes my nose bleed with it's amasing power!

As I say, sane people would view all this differently,
