Question Today's Daydream -Jeep Succession Planning

With the Jeeps recent leaking injectors it got me thinking what will we replace her with when she is BER (beyond economic repair).

It would only need a major component failure such as the gearbox /transfer box/rear axle to trigger a BER replacement.

As it is the Wife's Motor this train of thought is a tricky one to navigate. I have always ruled out anything like a Range Rover / Disco/Money Pit.

I might have to swallow the crazy increase in VED for post March 2006 Diesel Power as the latest generation 4x4's are outside our present budget of up to £8k.

I know a later Grand Cherokee & a Patrol would fit the bill in terms of required size, Jeeps seem easy to find with under 70k miles on the clock.

I was not mad about our old Santa Fe as everything seemed to start leaking oil as it was out of the long warranty. A neighbour has nice looking a Kia Sportage but TBH we prefer the bigger Sorento.

Replacement would have to fit three initial essential criteria.

1) Be an Automatic.

2) Have under 70k miles on clock.

3) Not be LPG powered.

What do our family here suggest I look at - hopefully we will get another 2-3 years out of the WJ ?

Interesting......I'm in the exact same boat near enough but I'm looking for a 4x4 to buy before the end of May.

It's also for the wife and kids, and me to nick off her lol. I'm thinking of:

Jeep Grand Cherokee but must, MUST, be a petrol. I hate new age diesels for problems like you are having, they are all so common from all different manufacturers.

Nissan Terrano SWB The misses really wants something a bit smaller than normal and discounting my above statement about diesels I don't know of any problems with the Terrano 3.0

Mitsubishi Shogun swb 3.5 petrol

Or, just maybe sshhhhhhh, a p38 range rover
I hate the pompous, ostentatious range rovers after them.

The Mercedes ML 500 and ML 350 Petrol engined versions are getting a lot cheaper even for the much improved later W 164 models avoid earlier W163 ones though.

Doesn't your jeep use the same engine as one of the Mercedes ML.

Yep its the same 5 Cylinder engine 2.7 Turbo Diesel as in the W163 ML. This engine is also used in some older Ssangyong Rexton models.

The 2.7 engine was a bored out version of the earlier 2.5 that they built for yonks and put in the old C Class. The engine is pretty reliable being a chain driven camshaft as are all UK market Mercs.

Trouble with the W163 was inconsistent US build quality, poor ride and lack of steering feel plus daft things like if the angle sensor fails you have to replace the whole steering column think £1,000 ish for the part! On later W164 it is a replaceable sensor costing less than £100.

Later Jeep Grand Cherokee has the 3 litre V6 Mercedes Diesel unit until the Mercedes engine supply deal finished after MB offloaded Chrysler-Jeep.

Isn't that engine the one that the veggy guys over at vegetableoildiesel.com love? I know a lot of guys over there that single tank the Rextons!!!

a neighbour has the jeep commander with the 3.0 v6 td, i'm considering it in distant future, the idea of a yank yacht appeals even with merc hardware. also thought of pathfinder but seems they have been known to suffer the same chassis issues as the
navaras. also a late y61 trol.

Had a 90 series before, probably one of the best out there ever made (in terms of best mid sized 4wd vehicle) but I'm not seeing anything out there now that's decent that's anything like the right amount of money. They were quite cheap when I sold mine but seem expensive now for rot boxes.
