Default Hello from 'down under'

Hi all,

I am about to ask my opening question and it may be the one everyone remembers as 'the dumbest one'!

I have a 1994 Terrano TD27 and it is pretty gutless...poor acceleration and not liking uphills (which we have a few of here in NZ). I have done much Googling/You Tubing prior to joining this site and this has not helped me with my query.

Can anyone please tell me if my car has a MAF and, if so, where the damn thing hides? I've looked at dozens of engine photos of Terrano MAFs on the 'net and can't find anything under my bonnet that looks like a MAF (or anything that has Hitachi or Bosch on it)!

The MAF is a sensor on the output of the air filter, it will have 4 or 5 wires going into it. I don't think they were on the early ones. Post a picture of the engine bay, on the Air filter side and we should be able to tell you.

I've taken a photo that I hope is good enough...if it's the wrong area, or too close to the engine, let me know and I'll take another.

While you're at it, I'm going to pre-empt some of my fellow members and say let's see some pics of the whole vehicle. (It helps some of us recognise the more exotic versions!).

It's a bit mad on here, but that's how we like it.

1994 will be the TD non-intercooled which don't have a MAF

Sounds to me like it's fuel starvation, have you changed the fuel filter and does the primer go solid with the engine running on the fuel filter head when you try and pump it?

Really appreciate the knowledge being shared guys.

it's getting dark here, so can't do the fuel filter check tonight...I'm have a look in the morning.

Regarding 'whole car' photos...I'm heading to a mate's farm for a few days tomorrow afternoon, via the Rainbow Road (Canterbury). It's a scenic route, avoiding the inland route that is now crammed with traffic following the big 'quake in Kaikoura. I'll post pics on my return of the old girl in some scenic landscapes.

I tried the primer this morning...when engine was running I could press the primer down. There was some resistance to me pushing, but I could do it relatively easily with one hand.

I'm off to the spares place now to get a fuel filter, as I haven't replaced this previously and then I'll check the mini filter.

From that little bit, your car looks more like my WD21 Terrano, rather than than the R20 Terrano II which is the common one over here.

There is no MAF on that, I think you will have a hand throttle by the steering wheel on your car.

This is something like what you would be looking for, if you did have a MAF.

Hm, a semi-productive day at best.

Changed the fuel filter without any issue, but the 'elusive' mini filter was another matter...I heeded the advice in the technical download to keep a close eye for a spring when removing the banjo bolt. Not only wasn't there a spring, there wasn't a mini filter!! I did some persistent, but cautious fishing, but nothing, nada, zilch.

To cap that, when I reassembled everything, there's a leak around the banjo bolt. The bolt was done up very tight by the previous owner and in the end I had to remove the power steering pump to get the bolt undone. So, tomorrow I will dismantle things to get back at the banjo, tighten it further and then I hope to get away on my trip (albeit one day late).
