Angry lazy terrano11

hi im new on here bit of info would be great , ive recently bought a terrano 11 2.7 2001 love the car very comfy rides nice starts & stops good . my concern is it likes to plod will maintain 50 60 easily but when it sees an hill at times i feel its a 1.6 pulling me!! . i recently purchased this from a garage with only 84000 ive noticed big increase in mpg also at night with headlights behind me ive spotted black smoke & the tick over seems to have dropped couple hundred revs which now produces a droning noise inside . i mentioned all of these to the dealer from what ive read it seems like the mass air flow sencer but he tells me no as it would kick the engine management light on if it was at fault.. not really sure now if its me or maybe some other prob... id be gratefull for any help or suggestions as you prob know what dealers are like once theyve had there money.. cheers

HI Gaz.

you probably have a Bosch MAF. Easy test, unplug it. Go for a drive, is it the same? if so, its your MAF. Unplugging the MAF on a healthy car would result in a real struggle.

Could also consider EGR *IF* you have one, also air filter, fuel filter. How low are the revs? should be 750rpm give or take, and tick over should sound like a sweet sewing machine!

Black smoke out the back could certainly be MAF etc, but before we start debating on the various issues it could be, start with the maf as its easy. Also, as for the MiL, its not strictly true that it would come on if faulty, theres different levels of fault and tolerances. Is your MiL light actually working?

Failing MAF won't necessarily make the MIL light up, but may give you a fault code. This can be read to give you a more definitive answer , see downloads on how to read the codes from the ecu
Don't let the stealer off the hook

as said above in most cases it does not show up for a faulty maf.

It's your MAF then
Try a quick clean with some contact cleaner and a gentle cotton bud action

The ecu will store fault codes without displaying MIL, that only comes on when big shit happens and puts the engine in limp mode.
Your just in lazy mode

Black smoke, generally means too much fuel with respect to air.
When the maf gets fouled the ecu will reduce the fueling as the measured air intake volume is less so less fuel required.
Whilst cleaning the maf with a suitable solvent is generally a good thing to do, do check the obvious things like air intake and filter also.
Sounds like it's struggling for air.
