Chains
Now the prices have dropped a bit possibly the time to buy (may be going abroad next year where theyre compulsory) Has anyone needed to use snow chains on their truck ? how did you find them ? were they a pig to put on ? any types to avoid/go for?

Only compulsory if no "SNOW TYRES" fitted. ALL are easy to fit with practice, make sure you get the exact size for your tyres, Sorry only experiance is with coaches but they work well. KEV

Chains
Used some years ago and were a bit of a problem to put on.However last month a lady aquaintance purchased a set for her Laguna and I helped put them on.In the end we took the wheels off as it was so much easier than lying in the snow.Once that was decided it was pretty simple.Same procedure to remove.They made a great difference,especially on a fwd vehicle.

I have a set of 16mm chains for my Terrano.
When fitted to the rear wheels as stated in the vehicle manual the truck will drive through very deep snow and mud but loves to go in streight lines due to the limited slip diff, when this happens just back up a little and try turning again. Do not fit to the front wheels or the truck can spin 180° when braking or decending hills. Do prictice fitting the chains several times before you have to use them in anger and keep a pair of rubber work gloves in the chain box/bag as your fingers get cold very quickly. After fitting drive 10m-20m and retighten and again after a few hundred meters as they always seem to move and go slack. Do not exceed 30MPH or you rick the chains comming off and flailing round the bodywork. Remove them of as soon as you are back on tarmac as they wear very quickly and can damage the road surface (French/German police love to fine you over this aspect!!). Lastly give them a good wash then dry them before storing them to remove salt. |
