Tragic death after trying to help a stranded motorist
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england...shire-11912096
Just seen the above on the news, and thought how many of us would have done the same thing in his situation (tried to help). So just remember if you do help out other road users in this sever weather dont put yourself in danger to do it and most importantly be careful ! P/s I know you'll all know the dangers already but I think this really brings home the worst that could actually happen. |

It is a tragedy.
An important lesson though. We have to do a course, its all to do with liability and I maintain its formalising common sense but those of us who've survived so far must be doing it without realising! Its "dynamic risk assesment" Unfortunatley it cant mitigate pure bad luck What it does actually means is always looking for the hazard and how to deal with the risk. With vehicles , yes youre going to have to be vulnerable at times, but always always as far as possible put your truck between you and the hazard until the last possible moment (fend off fend in) even if it rather than you is presenting a hazard. It really is a case of dented car and insurance claim or dead you, your call. Dont stand on the offside in the carriageway talking to the driver, dont exit the vehicle without looking, dont leave the door swinging open. Theres so many little things you can do. One that a lot of people miss is in these conditions is if a car slides its pretty predicatable which way itll slide off the apex of a curve or at the borrom of a bank. Be aware and if you have to be there keep your eyes open and dont get distracted. If someone is available (and you trust them) get them to keep an eye open for you. This is no adverse comment on the poor sod who died, we dont know the ful circumstances and like I said bad luck does creep in. THINK & Be safe |
