Default High milers

Hi everyone. i have just read a thread where one of the members has covered 179000 miles.

It makes me think....our P Reg mav has covered 126000, My X reg mondeo has done 149000 miles. my old 1998 escort covered 295000 miles before it failed an mot for rust. and the car we had before the mav...a Sierra did 190000 miles.
My point being that when looking for a second hand car to buy (about 5 years old), the mileage in nearly all the adverts rarely seems to be over 89000 miles for what ever age car you look at. Is 89k a magical Number???? it seems to me that low milers are advertised as so, and the rest cover 89000 miles. has anyone else noticed this.... dasboard re-calibration...Hmmmmmmmm!
i am not lucky enough to be in a position to buy new cars. the way i see it why pay £18000 for a car when i can get one 5 years old for £3000 do 200000 more miles in it then throw it away.

I agree with you on the 'magical' 90k figure and it does seem as if the car isn't a big lump then that does apply. Genuine or not - you decide?

Colleague had a Vauxhall carlton used for motorway runs (3.0 V6) that had 425k on the clock when he dumped it. Was like the preverbial Triggers Broom though. Several gearboxes and one engine swap

Also support you logic re. buying cars a few years old where some other mug has taken the depreciation hit. We just look smug? I currently drive a high spec. '97 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 which I bought for £5k three years ago when it was 6 years old. An GF bought the '97 Mav 2.7tdi at 5 years old for £8k This had 50k when she picked it up and now has 140k.

Default High milers

it would be interesting to do a survey of the vehicles that members own with the mileage. just to get an idea of what is out there. i'll start

P reg mav 2.7tdi 126 k still running
X reg 2.0L Mondeo Mk2 149k still running

Highest ever 1998 Mk4 Escort 1.4 LX 295k (sold for £50)

lowest ever 1975 Mk1 escort 1.1 66k (sold in 1985)

Hiya,

Mines 51k - P Reg T2 2.7tdi SE Tourer.

Genuine, pukka Nissan service history docs. Was in storage for 6 years.
Slight rodent damage to some pipe insulation according to the first service after storage !!.
Half expecting to get fingers caught in a trap while poking around the block !
Having some electrical/starting probs at the moment, but otherwise runs like a dream ( just put new battery in and suspect immobiliser probs ), and bodywork and interior is spotless ( or was till I got me paws on it ;-) ).
Looking forward to not parting with for many years to come !

Paid 3.5k for it a year ago, and although looking a bit dated inside now, is still a very comfortable, practical and fun top of the range motor at a real snip for it's condition.
Do I sound smug ?
Cheers
Ian

not quite on topic but look here:

http://www.motinfo.gov.uk/internet/j...us-Request.jsp

you can check the milage of every car, (since computerised mot's began) and find out what it failed or was advised on. It should eventualy be a good tool to combat mileage fraud!

for now its good to check on your own vehicle or one you are thinking of buying.

our vehicles and mileage these are ones we presently own rather than things we have sold

1999 transit 140K
2002 '02' grand vitara 72k
2002 '52'grand vitara 31k
2005 '55' berlingo mulitspace 9k
2007 '57' Cotoen C1 1k (i think) i havent ever sat in it :

we once had a transit wih over 400k and a berlingo van with over 250k and a 205 with 190k.

we recently sold our mort recent T2 at 136k (I think), I am currently deciding on buying an old D21 to replace it.

Y reg T2 2.7 tdi = 76K bought last year,not a bit of rust!
V reg Hyundai Atoz 1 ltr = 72k also bought last year,mint!

Previous to my T2 i had a 51 Renault Laguna Sports tourer,1.8,bought in 2003 with 86k on clock, when traded in it had 112k on it.

V Plate T2 with 69K on the clock with more to come
Past motors with high mileage have been
F plate highly modified Escort 1.4 126K with no probs just got traded in for a newer escort
M plate highly modified Escort 1.8 150bhp GSI 110K traded in with blown engine :
But the best one was my very highly modified D plate Capri 1600 with 280K on the clock but put no 2 piston through the head doing 67mph in second gear  :

2007 navara pickup open back with 5000 miles
2007 navara auto pickup with snugtop with 13000 miles
1998 swb 2.5d transit with 130000 miles
1999 escort 1.8d van with 105000 miles
2001 citroen relay 1400d (2.5d non turbo) with 50000 miles.
the escort spends least time in the garage, was the cheapest, and does the most MPG.

Present Cars are.

S plate 1999 Terrano 81k
53 plate 2004 Citroen C2 33k
L plate 1993 Vauxhall Corsa 63k
1956 Nuffield 4DM tractor 8500hrs

I have had many cars in the past including 1993 T2 that left me with 129k on the clock, but the one with the highest mileage was and the most reliable car / van I have ever owned and the longest I have ever owned a vehicle (7 years), was, and don’t laugh, a maestro van that was still going strong with 190k on the clock when I drove it to the scrap yard because the body was falling off.
