I did mine for tools and offroading gear but could easily have been set higher to allow storage underneath.
 Go for a metal support rail (like your rooff racks) and bolt them to the side of the truck. Then put some ply ( much stronger than mdf) on the rails, simples  Here you can see my alu rail along the side
