my Terrano camper conversion

I did mine for tools and offroading gear but could easily have been set higher to allow storage underneath.

Go for a metal support rail (like your rooff racks) and bolt them to the side of the truck. Then put some ply ( much stronger than mdf) on the rails, simples

If the boat's a rockin... don't come knockin...

Maybe some caravan corner steadies, will also help with levelling too.
What about water storage, small sink, bucket and chuck it.

You really need to consider ventilation, the boat roof ones are worth considering, some you can screw down from the inside to fully seal them.

Don't rely on open windows, they will let the rain in, easy to force open from the outside.

Some lighting, with switches reachable from the bed.
Think about how to lock/ unlock the doors as you get into bed. Where will your wet muddy shoes be after getting into the back?

Think about how a typical day will pan out. You wake up it is raining, you want a hot drink, visit to the loo, wash hands etc get dressed. Practice putting trousers on whilst lying on the floor, I have gone past that stage, I want/need full standing headroom, hot water, and a shower in the morning, a hot drink, breakfast...
Change of clothes, a shave, proper loo facilities.

Maybe a loo tent.



Now...
Full standing headroom, hmmmm, when I was young, we had a Bedford dormobile, it had a GRP lift up roof, with vinyl sides, in the roof were 2 fold out camp beds.

Now if you cut out the roof section, had a tilting or lifting roof.
Don't know how this would affect the strength though

edit, what you could do... is have a trailer, with high sides, maybe windows, with a door, table, bed, loo, all with standing head room, battery, water, sink, cooker, heating, fridge...even a shower, hot water, even electric hook up. Corner steadies.

Oh and maybe you could find something like, this pre made using modern lightweight materials. That way you won't need to convert the car each time, and you can just hitch it up.
If you look carefully on the motorways in the summer, you often see box like structures like this being towed behind all types of car. There are also special sites where you can put them too.

Our boat has all these facilities, and I wouldn't rough it again. But Hey Ho... you are still young, comfort comes later in life.

I still like your project though... Good luck with it.

Thats the idea i would go for use the back of the folded down seats as your height for your rear storage area and when folded down this becomes your bed area you could screw some ply to the back of the seats to form a firm bed base
Fold down shelf attatched to back door to take your cooker sit on back step and brew up

Good idea, saves all that tedious taking the bed etc in and out all the time. Keep your needed stuff in the drawers .

Nope, but I found that air blows through from the sunroof when driving, so it does actually work sort of
