I get roughly 28 to 32 at 50mph. Not bad for such a heavy weight really,
When towing 22' 1300kgs caravan I get between 24 and 28 I was well pleased as i thought it would be very thirsty dragging that weight..
Took the van to Blackpool yesterday for my Son and his family, steady 50mph over Snake Pass 30 mins queing at end of M67 then steady 60mph rest of way, into strong head wind: 14.3 MPG :( Coming home, solo just me and daughter needle hardly moved from full mark.

That is pretty frightening.. don't want to go far at that mpg...
you not considered lpg or dont u do enough milage to warrant the conversion costs? shouldve bought a diesel !

I'll put a spanner in the works here; the speeds you describe, are they from the speedo on the Mavrano, or from a more accurate (GPS) source?
I ask because my vehicle the speedo consistently over reads by about 6 to 8 mph up to 70, over 70 the discrepancy gets bigger. So if I drive at an indicated 50, I'm actually only doing about 43mph. Means it does the fuel economy good, but i also know I'm driving slower than the traffic conditions often allow. Hence the reason that i try & drive to s even 56mph, which is about 25oorpm on my vehicle.

Looked into LPG, expensive and costs more on insurance, also some horror stories of LPG conversions. £2k up front for a conversion takes a lot of gallons to recover cost, plus look at how gas is increasing in price, although still only about half petrol. Diesel and petrol costs about same to buy but diesel cars cost more to buy. Differance in MPG between the two are not worth bothering about. I like a petrol motor for its power, I have 196BHP and 195 lbs of torque, have to go a long way to find that in a diesel. Plus i bought my car (no diesel model available BTW) cos I loved it with all its extras and everthing, tows fantasic, and the Wife can get in and out better than a low down car or a high up 4x4. Wouldn't have bought it, if I'd been worried about the fuel consumption.
yep it it an exspensive way to save money lpg when i worked on taxis some them were gassed up more trouble than they were worth! one old merc had like a gas burner ring sat on top single point inj thingy when relay opend gas was sucked down into engine by the down draft always blew back knocked damn thing off leaving gas flowing untill driver switched back to petrol the newer e classes they bought detected the gas in manifold and shut down as it had detected a foreign substance entring engine ! all good fun!
old 1972 Ford Cortina Mk3 did more MPG towing a 16 ft Sprite major than it did solo,

I get 24 mpg towing my caravan but its only a 12ft 2berth, overall on a caravaning trip I would expect 26 mpg. Regards bri

So glad I looked at this thread, Just did a trip from Suffolk Coast up to Leicester towing a late eighties 2 berth Bailey so not the lightest.
Not hanging around I matched the trucks doing 56 (passing the ones doing 52) and on occasion hitting 70 to pass a convoy when fed up with the logo on the back. 164 miles total starting with full tank and refueling again at destination took £50 at £1.49. My maths arrived at 22 mpg. Horrendous at today's prices so I won't be going far with the van again. The BMW K100RS can go the distance with a tent strapped to the back.

Hi all, I run two terranos a 97 on a p and a 52 plate, i use both to pull a 7mtr baily single axle weighing approx 1600kgs fully laden, the 97 plate terrano runs on 75% veg oil 25%diesel and returns about 20-22mpg and has done 130,000 miles and the 52 plate terrano pulling the same van returns about 22-24mpg running on 100% diesel and has done 70,000 miles, the 52plate has 16" wheels and has slightly more power on hills. i never go more than 50-55pmh unless i really have to.
they were not bought for there economy, but to pull my caravan, running one on veg oil is a great bonus.

I have an 02 2.7 TDI and tug a 1998 2 berth small caravan (about 1100 kg all up) and depends on the headwinds !!! Can be as low as 20 mpg but have also got about 25ish other times.... As I only get 30 on a good day solo it isnt too bad? However at the cost per gallon today we do limit how far we go towing now, which is a shame

£112 to fill my 2002 2.7tdi drove 440 miles with caravan on back half of that mileage
apparently that 26 miles to the gallon so not so bad
Thats what im getting too Welshjas but in my trol tugging my van. I dont think thats bad at all really. I used to have a 2.5TD frontera that i could only get 25mpg towing a smaller van.

Is that by the computer or neck of tank and was that just towing or solo 2
WOW towed our van to Aeron coast and due to the never ending hills i got a shocking 17mpg:eek:. Ithink it was the fact that the hills were not just short and steep but went on for mile after mile. I had to work the old Trol a bit, could really do with a turbo

Mine does the same.Only realised it when I got a SatNav.Now I know why everyone was passing me and giving me the beady eye(amongs other things)If I don't have the SN I try and stay around 2500rpm.At 3000 I'm doing about 70mph.
