My brother is looking for a new vehicle and has mentioned a Terrano a few times.
He'll mostly use it on the road, and go light green laning in it occasionally. Money's not really an issue, so which one's best ? By that I mean which one's got most toys ?

SE+ , is that the top of the range ? Are they better than the 3 litre ? from what i can see after may 2000 it is the top of the range with the 2.7tdi the 3.0l tdi is the sve.
3.0l has better mpg then the 2.7tdi but cant run on svo but from what i have heard it can run on bio diesiel.
doesn't the 3.0lt have engine issues, i have heard that the 3.0lt patrol engines are prone the piston failures, thats from another forum, :thumbs
Terrano 2.7tdi 2005 or a Troll if had the cash :thumbs

[QUOTE=daved;108052]Get a jeep then you get to sit in this sort of comfort with a Merc 5 cylinder pushing you along ;)
The older Jeep has a crap engine with individual cylinder heads nothing to do with Merc renown for overheating and blowing the head gaskets.
I did not know they ever fitted the old Merc 5 cyl Diesel engine- never seen one but I am not a Jeep Buff.
The later Jeep had the Merc V6 common rail engine and thats good but they had lots of problems with leaking injectors that cost a fortune to replace and can be difficult to remove as they are clamped in situ rather than screwed in. The carbon gets up the sides of the injectors between the walls of the cylinder heads and they stick solid. Specialist job to get them removed from the cyllinder head. Over a grand for a set of injectors they are laser offset drilled.

OOOOOOOHHHHH THAT LOOKS JUST LIKE MINE! :naughty
After driving a Grand Cherry it soon became clear Mavericks and Terranos aint for me... BUT before I drove one I thought they were ok :lol
Personally, if money was not an object and it had to be a Nissan (especially with potential off-road use in mind) i'd go for a live axled Patrol, no silly crappy independant wishbones to bother with and much stronger and better to drive

well i have driven all sorts of 4x4 over the years and owned most makes, I am happy with my t2 van it tows my trailer, goes off road daily, and is a no frills working vehicle, that is economical to purchase, and run, and holds it's value well. Nothing falls in value faster than loads of gadgets petrol engined 4x4's even gas converting isn't an option (and i used to convert to lpg for a living!) you never get your money back as it costs a fortune and kills the car's internal space, or ruins it's ground clearance depending on tank choice.
I am currently considering a Jeep (2.7 diesel) for my wife, but then she does spend a fair bit of time at the hair dressers and it should look good on their car park :lol

Im not sure where youve got your info from but its a bit confused
The 5 cylinder common rail rail fitted to my 52 reg is definitely a merc diesel. It is the engine fitted in different forms to sprinter vans, the ML range and some saloons ( 300's?? if I recall from when I was doing my pre purchase homework)
The previous diesel engine ,to be avoided, was higher capacity i think it was 2.8 but significantly lower power. Then Jeep combined with / taken over by Merc or whatever happened and as reported on various jeep forums there was an upturn in build quality (Austrian factory producing for UK & middle east at least ) , better engines and components.
Merc opened their parts cupboard to help put the jeep nightmare to an end. That included binning the old crap engine and dropping the 2.7crd workhorse in.
Natural development and evolution has of course moved the range on and it now has the superb 3.0 v6. Driving that is believing, I dont know anything like as much about the 3 litres other than it is definitely Merc sourced and Bosch fit in somewhere. I have not heard of repeated problems with the 3 litre other than fair wear and tear and the odd rougue problem as can happen with any vehicle.
The injectors on mine are as you describe and clamped in. They are a breeze to change (especially if youre binning them :augie) They cost £180 new from merc , top whack of course and yes thats approaching a grand :thumb2 for a full set (I was told they were nearly £300 each a couple of years ago  ) or around £80 to £100 each recon exchange.
But lets put that in context mine is at around 90 000 (i honestly havent looked for ages and as any jeep owner will tell you the electronic display only does trip or total so Im on trip :nenau ) I have the service records and receipts for mine and it is on 4 originals one of which will need changing soon and the one I changed last year. I regard that as quite good :D
Other parts prices are not excessive. Air filters, oil filters, batteries etc etc are all in the same bracket as comparable trucks/engines inc Terranos. I needed a new specialist exhaust clamp dealer only for mine, quite a big chunky thing , took a deep breath went in......... £20.......:):):):) Battery of a higher rating than the old chrysler one.........Bosch......£80.
The year and a bit Ive had this truck has probably been one of the cheapest periods of motoring , maintenance wise for ages :thumb2
Jeeps did have a justified and horrendous reputation in some areas but as far as Im concerned on the oil burners that seemed to get sorted early in the noughties engine wise, the build quality is beyond reproach and the shed load of on board goodies all still work :thumb2:thumb2
