10/10/10 luckiest day for 100 years! Lucky my a**e!!! So 10am my daughter sends me a message - her car has a flat and the spare is bald and flat. Jump in the Terrano to pick up both wheels and take them to have new tyres fitted. Stop on the way to buy a paper, jump back in the Terrano, won't start! :naughtyGot all the panel lights but only get a click when I turn the key. Tried rocking the car in gear - nothing! Battery is almost new & fully charged so I know it's not that. Took both terminal connectors off and cleaned them - no joy, disconnected the cable to the solenoid, cleaned that - nothing! Disconnected & cleaned the earth lead from the battery to the chassis - nothing. Eventually got the son-in-law to come down to me, bump started the sodding thing, away it went. So it appears my starter motor has expired, and being in Spain and unable to speak Spanish I am at somewhat of a disadvantage. Had a look on eBay but of the sites will not send to Spain and anyway will only send to eBayers' registered address, (mine is in Bristol). Oh deep joy! So I've taken the car to the garage my daughter & her husband use and left it outside their front door for them to find this morning, with son-in-law going there later to explain what's needed - next problem is, tomorrow (Tues) is a bank holiday here in Spain, so they won't get a motor in until at least Wed, so I'm looking at probably Fri before I can get the car back. In the meantime me n 'er are stuck in our apartment at the of of a mountain, 4 miles to town, running out of food (couldn't do any shopping yesterday, everything closes on a Sunday) and beer! If I rent a car by phone and if they will deliver they will never find our apartment (it's up a 2 mile track only suitable for 4wd and once they see the state of it they will probably turn the rental car around and refuse to let us have one. 10/10/10 lucky? Bull manure!!!!!

Briggie I think has a starter, but why not strip the starter first it could just be contacts on the solenoid, Rick

Good thought Solarman, but I don't have the facilities to work on the car here. Garage already has the car and have said they will do what you suggest - they have a man who does their electrical repairs, they will give the starter to him to see if he can fix it - replacement will be a last resort. Good to know there are still some straight & honest garages about!

Well, got the Terrano back from the Spanish garage after my starting problems. Wasn't the starter motor, the solenoid or connections, it was this, whatever it is! With me speaking no Spanish and Senor Sanchez speaking no English I left the garage none the wiser bur 80€ lighter. I think it's probably the ignition switch, in which case I probably got off fairly lightly at 80€, particularly as I was expecting around 200-250€ for a new starter motor with labour.
Can anyone enlighten me as to what I have paid for please?

was going to say reading first post is it contacts on ignition swithch.

they wear out, but some times can get some time out of them by turning
key verly slowly thru positions.

does look like bottom of ignition barrel, a £30 part plus an hour to fit.

Thanks for that T-the-T2, sounds like I wasn't ripped off then (paid 80€ - around £72). I think garage labour charges here in Spain are about the same as the UK.
