am I sad? I just cant get enough of Grand Designs on telly.

I just love that program! I love the way its filmed, I love the designs and buildings, Kevin McCloud is a brilliant presenter and I love his manner. Just watched a re run tonight (as I do) and it was about an old waterworks building getting done up by a couple. this building is huge, and they did pretty much everything (except specialist stuff) themselves! Amazing. Poor chap had to remove all the old plaster from the vast walls himself using a pneumatic chisel, then later, scrape by hand the old crap on the ceiling.

the end result was magnificant, hats off to these people they give me so much drive to do my simple little projects like my shed! I hope one day, to build my own house, i really do....

Yeah I agree with that it's a crackin show. Did you see the two houses in Huddersfield? One was an old mill building that a couple refurbed and the other was a hexagonal shape just below Castle Hill. Check out 4OD the show from this week, lifted an old barn on steel and dug out below to build an under ground house.

I reckon my extension is about as near to self build as I'll get and thoroughly enjoying it even though it's taking ages.

PS the sheds look great Clivvy

PPS You make good pot of tea

i havent seen the Huddersfield one, i suspect thats from an older show as the new series has only just started, and yes, saw the one where they built under the barn, brilliant, absolutely brilliant!

Ive seen so many of these programmes where the couples have worked so hard, through the night, doing things themselves, and it takes me back to the days (including now) when me and Heidi had to do similar jobs on our house because we couldnt (and still cant) afford to get someone else to do it.

The jobs i like, are those we start from scratch, or from a very blank canvas.

the second shed we are building now is from scratch, and im loving doing it (its very far from professional, and not perfect by any stretch of the imagination-but its MINE), then you come in, watch Grand Designs, and realise that what your doing is miniscule, compared to what these guys take on. Puts things into perspective, but gives me such drive to carry on and improve on what i am doing!

p.s. Jim, loved your drain idea, im doing it.

the huddersfield one is ( was ) a old underground water tank , on the corner of the road that leads to hall bower , just below castle hill , its won many awards and the owner sometimes has open days

yeah im a big fan of property ladder, and location location (relocation relocation), but Grand Designs is by far the best. its very well filmed, very well presented, and if you want an idea for your own home, thats the show to watch because its FULL of them.

Kevin drives a Landy though....what about that?

ha! i saw one a few weeks ago, and in the distance you could see a Fourtrak meandering down an old dirt track!

i love 4x4's me.

Did you see that GD's in France. An old couple had bought a derelict chateau that the Germans burnt down when they left. The old couple did most of the work themselves including new floor joists. Very nice job of it too.
There was also the castle in north Yorkshire that was a good one too.

Don't believe that Martin. I'm pretty sure if you put your mind to it you'd build a crackin place. You could build a steel framed building:thumbs

yeah I did see that one, i agree with Martin, superb job they did. I think i saw the castle one, but did you see the castle one in Tuscany? i think it was Tuscany, where basically the guy rebuilds the castle, a 1000 year old castle, brilliant!
