puff of smoke

this morning i went to start my car up ( had a long run up here from norfolk yesterday ) ..... she started first time as normal , but i got a puff of blue smoke then she run normally .. ive checked the oil / water ..... and its perfect .... no loss , no need to top up ...... is this normal ?:nenau

If it was grey/black smoke and it ran rough and settled down, I would go for a glow plug, they are not used much this weather so soon clears and settles down.
Blue smoke from past experience,( I am no expert) is associated with burning a little oil.
How long did it do it for?
Check it when on over-run, ie revving the engine and releasing the throttle,
oil can sometimes be pulled past the valve stems, or piston rings.
How much oil are you putting in between oil changes?
ALL engines loose/consume some oil, if not through leakage then past the rings or valve stems, no where else for it to go.
If it is a one off, check the oil regularly and make a note when it occurs again.

I hope you don't rev the engine just before switching it off (starves the turbo of oil), this drivers used to do 20 years ago, on petrol engines, they claimed the engine started easier..

it was a sort of light blue smoke on first start up , it only lasted about a second.... i check oil / water regularly , and never had to put any in , ive tried it since and it hasnt done it ..... strange innit ?

Hot engine, hot thin oil, hot day, when you switch off the engine, one cylinder will be on induction, ie part vacuum, so pulling in thin oil past the rings could be one explaination.

This has the advantage of upper cylinder lubricant when you cold start.
So probably normal for the current conditions.

The 2.7TD like mine, doesn't have a MAF, only the 2.7TDI with intercooler, came in after 1997 I think.

Pete you worry too much, that is what diesels do, most times you just do not see it, your motor is fine, STOP WORRYING, Rick

But it could be your near side rear wheel has locked up and what you see is the smoke from the dragging tyre.

These engines run on just about anything so i'd forget that 1 :thumbs

Don't worry. A few splutterings at cold start is normal. It's a 20yr old design and IDI for goodness sake!

If it runs on 2 or 3 pots regularly for a short time, then it is time to check the glow plugs..
