Lost fish

HI we reckon the Heron has been 8 little gold fish have disappeared.
any ideas to keep it away .

We tried a plastic one and a Heron attacked it, smashed it to pieces.
We now have a net over the pond which is approx 4 inches above the water.
Available from water garden places, it is a mesh approx 15mm x 15mm.

put a plastic owl on a pole by the pond, it will shite it self when come for dinner again. ps they use them at my fishing club around the lakes. :thumb2:lol

put a carrot in a mousetrap at the bottom of your pond, that'll give the heron a suprise :D

trip wire about 18 ins from edge of pond 4-6ins high. makes it hard for it to approach the pond( no good if it flies and lands in pond)

My father-in-law uses plastic pig netting held on a Pergoda type structure it seems to work but its not the pretiest of things.

I am lucky that I have had no bird strike in 20 years of pondkeeping. I put that down to my dog George who lives outside in the back garden.

Big problem for me at work as we have a huge pond where we breed koi for a bit of fun and the Herons love the small fry.
Herons are clever as fook! Most items you can buy to keep them away will work for a few days but then get figured out by the Heron. This is why plastic ones dont work. They fly over see the plastic heron and think "hey what the hell is he doing on my teritory eating my fish" fly down and start a staring out competition. When the plastic Heron does nothing it will be attacked and the territory re-claimed.
They also have fantastic memories and if they see a Heron stood in the exact same place every day they become suspicious. I have found that it is this great memory that can also be their down fall. I cureently have no Herons dining at my pond as I "spooked" them away. You have to give them something scary to remember :naughty
One day I hid in the bushes and waited and waited. The Heron landed and out I burst making the loudest most awful din you could imagine waving a plastic carrier bag and swinging a football clicker at it.... and its not been back!
I guess it thinks to itself I aint going back there in case that weird monster gets me :thumbs
