im on holiday in norfolk as most of you know , so im using a dongle , its great for all sites , except it seems this one ,i can access every site no problems , but have a heck of a lot of trouble trying to get in here , all i get is a message that says " internet explorer cannot display the page " ..... but occasionally i can get in the forum ...... i have no problems accessing any other site , only this one .... HELP :o
might be a DNS issue at the site where the server is hosted. you could try alternative DNS yourself, such as google DNS to see if that makes a difference?

Hi pete at home I use a Dongle all the time but it is bad on Internet Explorer, the best is Opera, it is faster and no problems, Rick
Briggie, I use a mobile dongle at home and don't have any problem with it. Are you sure its not that DNS issue people mentioned?

every other site i have absolutely no problems
every other site i have absolutely no problems
There was a thread recently about problems with accessing the site after bat21 had work done on the server and I think it explained how to clear the DNS cache. I have no idea what a DNS cache but maybe that previous thread would be of some help.

hang Pete, i thoguht you said flushing the dns didnt work? but here you say it did, but still have access problems...im confused...im going to assuem you still get "this page connot be displayed". When you open a new browser window, do you get a "recorving your last session" message, or is it normal?
also, as other have suggested, it will be well worth trying Opera or Firefox, to eliminate the possibility its IE being a cock.
if you are saying access is random, then thats different, and probably NOT your laptop, might be something to do with Three's service/dns settings etc, another option is to change your DNS to someone else, such as google, to see if that works..

it seems that i can gain access to this site sometimes , perhaps the 3 network has scruples ? :augie

Having the same on my home connection since site upgrade originally thought site had closed not good for new members who may think the same
it could be that something has gone wrong with the sites dns records, perhaps they havent replicated correctly or something with the service providers i dunno..

I was told on the dongles some sites have different protocols to allow access and may hang when theyre trying to decide if its a mobile phone or a normal router trying to access and therefore how to display.
We use a "3" dongle on the laptop when we're away, the missus uses (or used to use) ie mostly , i always use firefox. She has more access problems than me which seems to back up the theory that its worth swapping to firefox/mozzilla (better browser anyway)
We also have mobiles on voda, o2 & Tmobile that produsce erratic and inconsistant results when in the woolybacks, all to do with signal. Not an exact science and produces very unscientific results.
For those of you reading this thread and thinking what is DNS :nenau then this link may help.

Guys, I am 99.9% certain that the DNS problems are not this end. During the move to the new server I kept the same IP address and DNS server names. This seems to be isolated incidents with some ISPs
You can resolve this issue on you PC by following the steps below:-
Using windows explorer (not internet explorer) find the Hosts file which is located in the c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc directory.
Right click this file and then left click on properties.
Near the bottom in the Attributes section, make sure the Read-only box is un-ticked. If it is ticked, remove the tick and click OK.
Now double click the Hosts file and open with Notepad. Go to the bottom of the text and add the line:-
65.38.186.188 (then press the Tab key) www.nissan4x4ownersclub.com
Now save and close this file.
If this file was originally read only, follow the steps above to put the tick back in the correct box.
Now reboot your PC and all should work :thumbs

Sounds like you haven't got admin rights to your PC if it isn't letting you save the Hosts file.

Have a nice Hol.

what operating system have you got, XP, Vista or Windows 7?
Tried to do that but it says unable to create the file

It is odd that the message says unable to create the file as you are not creating it, you are simply editing and saving it.
It is odd that the message says unable to create the file as you are not creating it, you are simply editing and saving it.
Done exactly as described thats what it says when you try to save it. Im running vista 64 bit
well, as its the host file, Vista wont liek you editing it full stop, so make sure UAC is off, and ensure its not set to read only AND not blocked for any reason (says so in the properties where you set the read permissions etc)
any body could also try using different DNS servers, all you do is go into your network card properties, click on Internet Protocol Version 4 and choose Properties. In there, click advanced, then DNS at the top, click ADD, then add the dns servers of your choice, googles are 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

Where do you find network card properties.Surely all this shouldnt be necessary had no problems before the site upgrade and have no problems with other sites

Well i dont think this is oranges fault as im not with them!
the problem could be that the DNS records for that site are screwed through your providers DNS records, this is why its worth trying different DNS addresses to see if that is the case. accessing yoru network card properties depends on operating system, but generally you go into Control Panel, Network Settings then right click your active LAN or Wireless card and choose properties. if it doesnt work, simply go back in and remove. If it does work, just report it to yoru provider, see if they can fix...
not saying this will work, as I dont actually know whats wrong, its just I work in IT, and this is somethng we would try from a diagnostic point of view....

I've just talked Plank (Chris) through this one with Vista and he is now working fine.
1) Click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories
2) Right click "Notepad" and select "Run as administrator"
3) Click "Continue" on the UAC prompt
4) Click File -> Open
5) Browse to "C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc"
6) Change the file filter drop down box from "Text Documents (*.txt)" to "All Files (*.*)"
7) Select "hosts" and click "Open"
8) Go to the bottom of the text and add the line:-

9) Now save and close this file.
Now reboot your PC and as if by magic.... all will be fine :thumb2
now im back home , im having no problems at all ..... quick access everytime .... perhaps its something to do with the speed of the dongle .....

If you are waiting for a reply to a pm i will catch up soon honest!
glad that works, and forme, proves its a DNS replication issue. I have no idea about the site upgrade/update, so cant explain why, theres lots of reasons for DNS issues, but I suspect that some providers DNs records are still pointing at a different IP address for the site or something...?! The HOST entry solution is just telling youre PC that when you browse to www.whatever, go to http://***.***.**.*** ip address instead, its bypassing DNS. If you typed the IP in the IE address bar, it will still take you to the site. Seems googles servers are up to date, i suspected they would be, they are very reliable. I wonder if simply the service provider of the internet connection the site is hosted from, simply need to update their DNS records.....
.... perhaps its something to do with the speed of the dongle .....
Pete was the dongle access via Orange?

no , my dongle is 3 mobile
now im back home , im having no problems at all ..... quick access everytime .... perhaps its something to do with the speed of the dongle .....
nope.
different service provider, different dns servers, whatever change has occured with the site update, its screwed dns.
thats my thoughts anyways.
....whatever change has occured with the site update, its screwed dns.
If the DNS was screwed no one would be able to access the site.
It is only a very small minority that this has affected... I can not fix what isn't broke this end :nenau

it will probably be the dns replication across other servers, not specifically the hosting server i think, hence the random users that cant connect. My suggestion, from a diagnostic point of view, for changing the dns servers manually on the pc fixed it for someone, this is why my thinking is dns. Im just interested thats all, not trying be a jobs-worth!:thumbs

no , my dongle is 3 mobile
3 is run by hutchinson telecom, who certainly were part of
orange or a fore runner of orange.
t-mobile or 121 as they started certainly used very similar
mobile platform to orange.
t-mob and orange are in merger talks, and i'm sure fear was
that 3 would get get swept away in process, monopolys
said would end up with just 3 mobile/bb firms.
bit of thread but shows relationships.
pretty sure that when i lost sight of site, wasnt working
via search engines or typing url in address bar.

Improving speed and signal strength
Mobile Broadband uses a radio signal. The strength of signal will vary depending on where you are, weather conditions and the construction of the building. If you need a stronger signal strength and improved download speeds, here are some things you can try:
•To make sure you get the best from your dongle, treat it like an aerial. Think about the positioning (e.g. upstairs will be better than a basement flat)
•Using the USB cable that came with your dongle will help to reduce interference from your computer and should make your signal stronger
•Some rooms get a stronger signal than others, depending on thickness of walls. The more windows a room has, the better
•You could also buy a wireless router, which can relay the signal. It can be plugged into a room with a good signal strength. The dongle is then plugged into the router and up to four computers can use it around the house.
•You can also check what level of coverage you can expect in your area on our coverage checker.
We hope these hints and tips have helped. We carefully manage the traffic on our Mobile Broadband network so that everyone has a fair share of the service. So in areas where there is a particularly high amount of internet use (and during busy periods like 6pm to midnight) we may moderate the speed of file sharing, so this activity might feel slightly slower than usual. If your modem is new and you are still having problems you can check our returns policy.

A dongle is just a mobile phone without the gubbins as I'm sure you all know.
So if your, say, Vodafone mobile doesn't work in a particular location or gets a weak signal there, then guess what, your dongle won't either.
Other than that technical issue, the ISP should have no bearing on access to a URL.

I have an Orange Dongle on a laptop, I cannot use internet explorer as it works but is far far to slow, have tried firefox but could not get used to using it, have almost always used Opera, but recently I have been having problems getting on to the site, most times "cannot connect to remote server" even though I am already logged on to Yahoo and others, sometimes repeat trying works others it does not, the most effective work round is to open another tab and while that is loading stab the forum and most times that works but not every time, seems to me that with these dongles if you make no key strokes for a few seconds, communication is halted for a short while, and it seems to take a second or two to re establish connection, but I could be wrong, maybe all systems work this way, I have no land line so cannot compare, Rick

Pete, as this problem is isolated to Orange (or one of its partners), it has to be their problem.
Orange are renown for for having problems (see here (http://www.orangeproblems.co.uk/phpBB2/))... I would like to be in the position to help but, I have no control over their bad service :(
