Hi guys am Ben, and after months and months of searching for a quality used 4x4 (had to get rid of my peugeot finance car) i struck lucky and bought a 2003 FORD MAVERICK 3.0 V6 XLT 5DR (AUTO). I lived in the US for 2 years back in 06-08 and used to drive a Ford Expedition (which i loved), and was amazed to discover the Maverick, just when i was starting to contemplate going for another small family car (i had been looking for a long time like i said).

Basically i need as much help as i can from anyone who might hazard a guess as to what's wrong with the car, or more hopefully someone who may have had the same problem.

First of all just so you all know, i knew about this problem before i bought the car. I had been planning to spend alot more on a Land Rover a few days before and so thought that whatever the problem i could use the money left over (from the potential Land Rover deal) to fix the car.

Basically all i can tell you is that once fired up, the engine is noisey, kinda like a rattling sound (my inital guess is some kind of loose bearing). The car runs fine, but i dont know and neither did the guy who sold it to me wether it will run for 10,000 miles or 10 :s

Can anyone help?

Also does anyone know where i can get a owners manual etc.. for the car? All i got was the keys :'(

hmm...rattly noises from the engine arent necessarily a cheap fix, especially considering its a V6. Id consider the timing beltor chain, not sure what it is on the V6 but I suspect its a belt? Id check the hydrhaulic tensioner, they can rattle when leaking or in need of replacement. Id think about tappets, could just need a good quality oil change, dont forget, V6's although tough need care and attention, well, mine does anyway!

If you say its only noisey at startup, and presumably goes away when warm?

im probably not heling, any chance you can take a quick video? upload it to photo bucket and post? unless you can describe the sound in any more detail?

Hi clivvy, sorry about the delay, just been swamped in work this week :'( Well i had a good listen and look today, and in terms of noise it kinda sounds like a tractor. Obviously not as loud, continuious though. Tones down slightly when put into drive, its not very loud when in the car, but with the hood up and standing in front it does sound loud.

I examined the car, and i think the chain in the v6 is possibly the problem. It runs fine when you look at it but i feel that this clicky 'tractor' noise is coming from this, or at least in the surrounding area.

I dont have a camcorder, but i could record the sound on my iphone and e-mail it to you tommorow if you think you can help :)

Thanks for the help again, and any help anyone else might leave :)

p.s. i'm also pretty convinced the timing belt needs changing too. Any ideas in terms of costs? :)

as far as im aware the 3.0 is the r50, in which case this is the engine part of the manual .

after giving that a quick once over, now i think about it, (although i still maintain it sounds like a tractor) it could be this tappet noise.

My friend is going to fix the Maverick up for me, hes a mechanic whos shop specialises in 4x4. My other friend (also a mechanic) came and took a look last night and he feels it may be the cam shaft. He said its about 50 quid for the actual shaft and maybe 150-200 for the labour, anyone care to be more acurate with an estimate?

are you sure its not clutch related? isnt it the clutch plate that rattles on these when they are a bit worn? mine does it a little bit, not much, and yes, sounds a little like a tractor unless you put the clutch down, then it goes away....just a thought...as far as I know its not a problem, and can be fixed next time the clutch is replaced.

Hi guys, sorry its been so long since i posted just been mad busy as usual with work :(

I have a bit more info on the Maverick that am having trouble with. Basically i replaced the battery and thought that would get me to the garage to get it looked at, sadly i was mistaken. The car keeps cutting off, i think its when the revs get to low.

I took it to a garage whilst driving it yesterday (not the one its going to for its repairs), and the mechanic mentioned something about the bottom and shells :s he didnt seem to sure about the longevity of the car, making alot of grunts and other discouraging noises whilst he looked at it. He did mention that am loosing a lot of oil and that the injector could be clogged or contaminated in some way.

Does anyone care to make a guess at what could be wrong, bear in mind i obviously still have this horrid knocking/grinding noise whilst the car is on, it does seem to die down though the quicker i get :s

thanks for any help as always

sounds very much like what happened to Briggies (pete), i understand what the guy means about bottom end and shells, its the big end bearings i expect he means-not good, but fixable, probably expensive, BUT dont take what he has said as the final word, get it to the repair garage and let them take a look too (second opinon is always good).

V6 engines are extremely tough generally, its just keeping them oiled and cooled. If yuo are losing oil, wheres it going? leaking, out the exhaust or burnt up ? (smoke). as its a v6, i start checking the tappets-a good ioil addidtive from Wynns will sort tappet noise out. i have the hydrhaulic tensioner checked-they can rattle when knackered, and id have the timing belt done at the same time if you think its worth it after a check.

sorry theres nothing concrete to go on for your car, i just dont know the 3.0 V6 i only know my Mazda 2.5 V6, so not sure how similar they are, but ive never heard of a V6 going like that in the 5 years ive owned one, and im a member of two clubs, they all drive V6's...best of luck!

Hi again guys. right ok so after spending a couple of hundred carrying out small repairs (new battery, oil change etc...) my mechanic (whom i trust totally) fears that the engine may be totally lost. If this is the case does anyone no of a place where i can get the engine re-built or a new engine put in etc... anywhere in the UK really as long as they have the capabilities to collect and deliver the car, obviously if there is a place in Merseyside i could drive the car there.

Does anyone know how much it would cost me to carry out such a repair, has anyone done anything similar? if so how did things work out?

Thanks for all the help again guys, hoping to get this sorted out quick, as i have only been able to drive it 3 times, and its a lovely drive and so i want to fix her up and get her out on the road full time.
