Hi

Could someone please help! I have decided to buy a Terrano as my family car mainly due to the pure presence and also the 4x4 7 seater adaptability, its great.

I dont know much about them and am after some advice. I have a max of £5000 ish to spend and intend to keep it a long time so would like fairly low mileage.

Which is the better engine? The 2.7 or 3.0? I have no preference of manual or auto. Is there anything in particular I should be looking for?

All help and advice is very much appreciated.

P.S. Great website!

Thanks

Jon

I bought a 2002 3.0 SVE Auto about 8 months ago. Its been very good so far, just past MOT with no work required. It has 103,000 miles under its belt.
The 3.0 litre engine provides a good deal more ommph and is still delivers good fuel economy, around mid 20's for town driving and somewhere in the high 20's cruising.
I was not to sure about the auto box at first, but have grown to like it, you may find there are more 3.0 autos around...
Any other questions, just ask.

The 2.7 will do galactic miles & minimal servicing costs :D

As for the 3 ltr i would only be guessing that as said above, more power for towing & same engine as a Patrol :nenau

I have the 3.0 with manual box and its a very good truck get 30 mpg and its surprising how good it is off road also service parts are very reasonable and the truck is very easy to work on .
And its for sale :D

Hi Thedenster
Having owned a 2.7 non-intercooler T2 for a n umber of years - I love it. BUT I'm looking for a 3ltr to replace it. Having done considerable research I'd recommend a 3ltr manual because the autos, whilst very comfortable and easy to drive, (I love them - but not for a 4X4) I'm convinced they're more expensive to run and, ecologically, not as eficient as manuals. Also towing a big van, I prefer control over the box when I need to vary the power transmitted to the rear wheels, especially when in 4WD. I'm sure auto box owners will have a contrary opinion which will be equally as valid as mine. The 3ltr is also, strangely, more economical and more powerful than the 2.7, if you believe the stats!
Good hunting.

Ive never had a 3.0ltr, but have run a couple of 2.7tdi's (all manuals)

As has been said the 2.7 is bullet proof so long as you look after it (filter changes and oil every 6k miles) Ive used mine for towing 'vans, cattle trailers and various other things in all types of terrains and always found it more then capable both off road or on the motorway.
3.0's tend to come with all the bells and whistles on the later models - i.e. leather, elec sunroof, light washers etc etc

With the money you've got a little searching should find you a nice MK4 model with decent mileage...

If your wanting it for towing remember that an auto has a drastically reduced towing limit from a manual!

I would go for the bigger engine everytime.

If you are not towing the automatic is a really nice and easy drive.

Women folk soon get to love an automatic if you take the time to show them that they still have control.

I have a 2.7 R3mR and would have bought a 3.0 like a shot but at the time when my Merc 300 TE 4-matic finally let me down none were around within my budget.

A lot is made of the difference in economy between manual and auto my stance is its worth the margin with the sheer ease of driving.

You can of course use manual selection of the gears as much as the Nissan Auto will allow but that rather defeats the whole object of an automatic !

During the winter weather I have selected the 4-wheel drive mode without ever needing to use my diif lock and whilst other were unable to get through my auto was just brilliant.

The 3.0 is definitely the more powerful AND fuel efficient engine.

It had a chequered history when it was in the earlier Patrols but that was all sorted by the time they plonked it in the MkIV Terrano (around 2002 I believe?).

Personally, although I had one for many years, I'd avoid the auto. Big diesels I now know aren't that great with them because the torque is often just a bit too much. It also seriously limits the towing capability.
