Snap their bloody arm off for that gearbox then get it put on a pallet to your new garage! (after getting a reasonable all inclusive total price from them for fitting of course)

I spoke to the garage that has Briggie's Mistral this afternoon.

They have arranged a courier to collect the box and deliver it to their garage.

I have sent the garage £322.46 (£265 for the box + £57.46 for the courier fee). They estimated labor being £300 so, we will pay that once we have the final bill.

That is going to leave approximately £300 in 'the fund', once Briggie is back on the road we will have to work out where that money goes.

Progress at last :clap

I like the way you're thinking. It could also be worth saving as a bit of insurance against any nasty MOT surprises. Isn't the windscreen shot as well?

this is great news, the repair bill is about right too!! I liek the idea about having the windscreen checked though, lets not forget that AND unforseen costs, this is all very exciting, i'm dead chuffed!:thumbs

briggie
31-03-2010, 20:26
the garage rung me , they said the gearbox will arrive on tuesday , but arent sure when on tuesday , they estimate a couple of days to fit the gearbox due to other jobs in the garage .

i still cant find words to express my gratitude ,will you forgive me ?

sheila ( our lass ) says thankyou ever so much because i was becoming a pain in the arse :lol

Major service is a good idea. That way everything will have been checked and given a clean bill of health. Should give Pete some additional confidence that all is well.

Would be worth getting the windscreen done through Briggies insurance. Usually just an excess to pay.

So chuffed to see that this is coming along. Major thanks to Bat21, Clivvy and all actively involved and of course Briggie himself. Will be great to have him back on the road!

Or would you rather wait until they have successfully finished the job for you before you name them?

I asked Bridgefield 4x4 to pay for the gearbox direct from the seller, they agreed to this once I had sent them the money.

So technically they have both supplied and fitted the box :thumbs

In the unlikely event that there is a problem we only have one 'vendor' to deal with.

I agree with the full service thing. Got my local Nissan dealership to do a full B service and let their Terrano specialist have a full inspect of the rig within 48hours of me getting it. Then I got a photocopy of the mechanic's notes (not the service desk version) so now have a hit list for future attention. But probably not at Nissan. £75 an hour down here.

i'd probably do that to be honest...but i take pics of everything, especially when the cars being worked on. I think its good for documentation and if you require any comeback over stuff.

on my Mazda forum, one of the lass's there, shes the same, if cars in garage, she goes down tehre with her camera, and photo's everything then reports back. its actually really useful stuff. for example, when she had her timing belt done etc, she photo'd the whole process, so now we all know whats involved, handy.

briggie

problem is i cant get to the garage untill our lass comes home and i can " borrow " her disco , and she wont be home untill around 6pm , but to be honest id rather leave them alone and let them get on with it , but the gearbox is coming /has come today ..... exciting innit ? :naughty:naughty

garage just rung and said they had found the reason for the gearbox failure , while removing the old knackered one , they noticed 2 pipes joined together , it seems that the car had no transmission oil cooler ,which just made the atf get hotter and hotter until it cooked the gearbox , they suspect that someone had replaced the radiator with a manual one , so now they are looking for a after market transmission oil cooler or a original one , another delay !

Bat21
06-04-2010, 23:03
....but i still dont understand why on earth someone would join the pipes....

Pete, the oil cooler for the gearbox is part of the radiator that cools the engine.

Manual Mistrals have a different radiator that does not have the built in oil cooler. At some time during its life (quite recently I would say), your Mistral has had a replacement radiator fitted, whoever fitted it fitted the wrong rad hence having to 'loop' the pipes from/to the box.

Basically your old box would have been pumping fluid to what it thought was an oil cooler, the lack of the cooler in the circuit mean the AFT would just keep getting hotter and hotter until........ well you know the rest :(

briggie
06-04-2010, 23:12
thankyou for the explanation . so does this mean it has to have a new radiator ?

forgive my stupidity , but ..... what is a after market atf cooler then ? is it a different radiator than the original ? or is it a seperate thing alltogether ? , and will it work ok ?:nenau
in all honesty you will prob find an after market atf cooler will be some coiled up brake pipe:nenau

but if your having an after market cooler you wont need to change the rad

An after market ATF (automatic transmission fluid) cooler is basically a small radiator.

This is one I rescued from my broken radiator after hacking the bottom off with a hacksaw:-

And before you ask.... no you can't have it :D it is going to be plumbed into my trucks oil line as an additional cooler ready for our trip to Morocco later this year.... hopefully with a different ending to this one (http://www.ukgser.com/morocco09/) :thumbs

as a bit of a footnote , these guys offered to check it for me etc, and fix it , so i dont wanna push them , id rather the job was done properly and not rushed even if it means me being a virtual prisoner in my home during the day, will this after market atf cooler work as well as the original ? and if i choose later on can i put a original auto radiator in? cos ive seen one brand new and boxed in dewsbury ( near me ) for £179 , my question is, will the after market one work as well ( or better ) than the original , and could i leave that in at a later stage and put a original radiator in as well , and will it affect the performance etc ?

its a question for toolbox i recon. or terra . but your original one wont cool it less than 88 or is it 82 degrees the thermostat opens at

so thays why i considered making my own .

all depends what the after market one is like i guess , you can get all sorts of rads big small and fanned so who knows

my vote is the garage is fixing it and doing the work . so there must be some degree of trust in them knowing what they are doing, my expectation is anyway

im assuming the guarantee there work fora period of time . and as bat pointed out they are responsible for supply and fit .... so works for me.

just give them a polite call lunch time or run round with some donuts. that always works

anyway, i expect the garage know what they are doing if they are a 4x4 garage, they will know their stuff. a lot of aftermarket stuff can be much better than the original, and will most certainly come with a work/product guarentee, so your covered.

i popped down to the garage tonight to enquire as to the progress of sally , sally looked a bit poorly and was on a big hydraulic lift type thing with all her private parts exposed !!.

the good news is , the replacement gearbox is in , but at the moment they are trying to figure out where to place this additional radiator to cool the atf , cos theres not much space , one option is underneath the normal rad at a angle ,it seems the radaiator i found in a previous post has the connections on the wrong side , even though it says it is for a 1995 imported mistral auto . another thing they found is the fan blade appears to be much larger than they think it should be , its also exposed .

they hope to have it sorted by tomorrow ( saturday ) , but they are confering on the radiator i found on e bay ( a new one )

Pete, I have only just caught up with the latest on your trucks progress.

If that rad on eBay is the right one (which it looks like it is) I would fit that in preference to an auxiliary one, at least then you will know it is back to 'factory spec'.

If you can get over there in the morning and make 100% sure it is for your truck, if you need me to PayPal the money over to them while you are there just give me a bell :thumb2

i could kiss you ( but i wont cos you might like it lol ) seriously id rather fit that one too , even if it means that all the trouble the garage has gone to in aquiring a auxillory one and associated work is in vain , because i understand they had to remove that one from a vehicle .

hi,my mistrals at the auto shop at present, having had the auto rebuilt they advise fitting an aftermarket cooler as opposed to the one in the radiator, especially if your considering towing anything.i tow a small caravan.cheers

pgrem
10-04-2010, 04:00
just found this on wikipidia its talking about the pathfinder but that uses the td27 as well, cheers

The first generation (WD21) Pathfinders are known to develop rust in the following areas: the frame above and behind the rear wheels, the floor directly above the catalytic converter and under the back seats. On automatic-equipped models, the transmission cooler is notorious for clogging up and starving the transmission of fluid, resulting in a costly rebuild or replacement. Installation of an aftermarket transmission fluid cooler is recommended for any WD21 Pathfinder with an automatic transmission. Nissan techs generally recommend that the stock cooler in the radiator not be used at all.

briggie
10-04-2010, 07:24
i think the garage is panicking too , because they have a heck of a lot of work booked in for next week and are trying to do the job as quickly and cheaply as possible , ideally for them it would be better if it was finished today , i have no plans to tow anything although the car may have some weight in it , its also quite hilly around here , perhaps i should forget the original rad ? i dunno , but my opinion is surely its better to have it factory spec and also besides the atf cooler , it will have a new conventional radiator too , and that cant be a bad thing can it ? :nenau

briggie
10-04-2010, 08:03
thanks for the advice lads , it seems that perhaps its best if i let them fit this thing under the radiator at a angle and see how it goes on , then perhaps at a later stage add the original ? .

at least then it will be done today ( hopefully )

but it will obviously affect the ground clearance a little

When I used to have an old 3.5L V8 Range Rover with an auto box the crappy old factory cooler which looked like a copper pipe with wire fins on it started leaking so needed replacing.

I couldn't find a genuine replacement so after much searching and investigation I found and fitted an aftermarket oil cooler which worked really well.

I think that you should trust your garage. If in the unlikely event that the gearbox fails again then I'm sure it will be covered by their warrantee (might be worth getting them to confirm this for your peace of mind).

Nearly there! You will be out in the Mistral in no time.

the garage have said that sally will be done on monday , they have encountered a few problems with " repairs " by the previous owner , but these are now sorted ,they have decided rather than fit the notoriously inefficient stock atf cooler , to fit one from a 4 litre rangerover !!!!

ive seen the size of this thing and its huge ! , im guessing that will provide adequate cooling for the atf lol , it also means that needless expense on purchasing the other rad is avoided.

hmm..well, I always understood it that snorkels were pretty dear, like a few hundred, which of course makes it too expensive considering I will hardly ever actually make use of it! the whole idea was that if i start green laning/offroading, that i might start using it but we shall see how things develop.

Clivvy....get your tape measure out first before you waste your money....measure the height from the airbox down to the ground, i.e. the height at which water would start to enter the engine potentially. Lets call that (a).

Then measure the distance from the bottom of your doors to the ground, i.e. the height at which water would start to enter the vehicle.........lets call that (b).

Do you see where I'm going with this?......:augie

I ****ed up and had water about 1/2 way up the doors last year , it didnt leak , engine didnt go bang

as the air intake is in the wheel well I think you are ok for a few seconds unless you run out of air.
