Could be me but I'm sure somebody once said they were a tiler by trade on here?

Could do with some advice as I'm fitting a shower soon. Normally I would fit the tray against the wall and fill the gap with silicone so it aint gonna leak. Then tile around the tray with another bead of silicone where the tiles meet the tray.
However the shower that I've got says you can either fit the shower and enclosure direct to bare plaster wall and tile upto the tray and enclosure or tile the walls down to the floor and then fix tray and enclosure to the tiles. I prefer my way but is it wrong? could be the fancy enclosure wont fit if the tray is recessed into the tiles and enclosure fitted to the tiles if you see what I mean.

PS I'm now gonna hang my head in shame as this isn't to do with 4x4's:doh

when i was in the building you can do it both ways!!! we usually put tray in first then tile to the tray! but the other way keeps it all equal so tray and shower surround are being mounted at the same distance ie off the tiles:) or have your self a walk in wet room:thumbs

The best trays have an upstand (Vertical edge about 25mm high) on the 2 rear edges, you recess the wall, place tray in position then tile over the upstand. Silicone as required.
For standard trays I have always tiled after ftting the tray.
A quick note on the shower cubicle, no need to seal the inside, do all the sealing on the outside of the tray, otherwise they leak.

Well I recon that I'll do a dry run with the cubicle and tray and just to see how it all fits together. I tiled the walls and left the bottom rows where the tray fits so not too much hassle really.

Thanks for the thoughts guys.

its your way jim. but id always use the trays with the upstand on all 4 sides. they never leak ............ ever

better if you tank the walls first too....... keeps the mould at bay too
