New Ireland, UK driving fines plan

Wednesday, 28 October 2009 18:15
<rte:body>A new deal has been made between the UK and Ireland to ensure that disqualified drivers do not use the roads in either country.
The arrangement means that drivers from Britain or Northern Ireland who are disqualified for a motoring offence in the Republic will no longer escape that punishment when they return home.
Also disqualifications earned by Irish drivers in the UK will be recognised and enforced when they go back to the Republic.

It is the first step of its kind ever to be introduced in Europe.
The agreement is to come into force next February.
Stormont Minister Edwin Poots said the new measures will keep dangerous drivers off the roads by ensuring disqualified motorists will not be able to escape their punishment.

Anything mentioned about speed cameras Liam, thats the next logical step, a reciprocal arrangement for recovering fines?

But I am slightly confused; the fact you get banned from driving in another country (not your own, as the explanation says) under their legal system surely doesn't necessarily follow that you're banned worldwide - cos thats effectively what they are saying? Unless this is some kind of standard "euro-ban"?

I could understand if it was talking about a driver who's been banned in his own country not being able to drive in another, because then his licence has effectively been revoked by the issuing authority and isn't valid anywhere....that would make much more sense.
