I might be purchasing an Abi Viceroy from my sister in law and just want info regarding what level of insurance cover I should get and if there is anything in particular I should look for/avoid. I appreciate that things are different in the UK but am hoping for approximate cost of cover and which companies provide best cover. Still undecided about purchasing as I would need to leave it stored at her place as I have height restricted access to my place, I would much prefer to be able to keep it in my place when not in use. What might sway me is the fact that she will sell it to me at a good price. Things to check on the caravan itself would also be helpful as I haven't checked it over yet.

Hi Liam

What age is the van? If it is quite young and you are in the caravan club then their insurance is the best. You get new for old cover and they tend to be no quibble - pay out readily. My insurance for a 2007 compass, valued at 14500 is £27 per month new for old. I could get it cheaper from other providers but TBH the level of cover was not as good.

Thanks Lee,it is a 1995 model I believe. I don't know much about it and haven't seen it yet, the missus advised me not to have a look as it is full of stuff from their last weekend away recently. I have volunteered her and her sister to clean it up nice before I view it:D

Check out the Caravan and Camping Club !. Cant remember the price , but it was cheaper than the caravan club for my Swift Challenger 1999,

The caravan clubs new for old is for newer vans !.

Ok,what is the book price on a 1995 Abi Viceroy, then?

if you look here - http://caravanpriceguide.com/ it will give you used prices for most types of van.

The price for british vans is slightly higher in Ireland but continental vans are usually a similar price.

Ok, so I took the plunge, and am taking the caravan (Abi Ace Viceroy) for a very intense road trip this weekend. If it can travel the roads from my place to Connemara and back in one piece it should be up to anything I will want to use it for. Still haven't seen it but at €200 I suppose it is worth a punt. No idea what is coming with it and the sis in law never used the heater or the taps on the sink so I don't know if either is working. I do know the rear window has a crack but apparently it is not leaking. No shower fitted and some kind of porta potty which is obviously going to be emptied by the missus:sly
Never towed one of these buggers before so the weekend should be interesting,to say the least. Insurance and some caravan club membership still to be sorted. Thanks for all the replies, I never knew there were so many caravan clubs, need time to study the benefits of each before deciding. Incidentally,T2 insurance is up in a few weeks and I tried a few different companies, best so far is comprehensive with AIG (25plus) at about €295,with me and the missus and other drivers over 25.:thumb2

Never trust a woman to do a man's job. Asked the missus the age of her sister's caravan,1995 she says. Turns out she was reading the number plate of her sisters car and tows the van,it's a 1995:doh I reckon the caravan is actually a 1990 but have sent an email to Abi with the serial number so should get an answer soon.Women, don't you just love them:rolleyes:
