View Full Version : Possible Maverick purchase - any advise ?
Hi all,
My wife and I have just acquired a horse and need something a little more robust (and larger) than the Toyota MR2 I sold last week.
We've been looking at the obvious Discos (shhhhh) but think that the Terrano and Maverick offer more, for less.
Anyway, I have taken the day off on Thursday to go and look at a 1997 Maverick TD GLS LWB with just 85k on the clock. The pictures look fine and it has tax and MOT for a while too. Also has side bars and an A bar. The only thing wrong is the aircon needs a re-gas (apparently). Oh, and it has really dodgy 3 spoke wheels, but I can live with those until we find some Terrano ones. It's up for under £1700.
As this is my first 4x4 is there anything major to look out for on the Maverick ?
I have read that they should stall when pulling away in 3rd... if they don't then the clutch is slipping and needs replacing which is a 7 hour job ??!
Is there anywhere I need to look for serious rust ?
Presumably the parts are all Nissan items... do you get them from Nissan, or Ford ?
Sorry for all the questions...
Kind regards,
Daniel.
Would need to see pics to give honest answer :thumb2
Its a buyers market so dont rush at the 1st 1 ya see.!
Look on ebay.!
Rusty archs

if you can find a tdi, its the one with a scoop in the bonnet
its got more grunt
rust wise they are very good i have found
milage is not an issue as long as its got good service history
no cam belts on them
so all in all a good truck

Gonna be a sod to get a horse in the boot.... LWB or not!!! :lol :lol :lol
Seriously though, look for damage underneath from 'off road' fun, check the 4WD is engaging / dis-engaging, keep an eye on the rear when its started and rev'ed and check it aint kicking out grey/black smoke....

Are you just making this up - the rear shocks aren't even under the arch they are on the chassis about 12" in from the arch. Its the seat belt moiunts in the arch that need to be checked. And in all my years of ownership I've never heard of a battery tray issue on one of these.
Listen for gearbox noises on early models as they had a weaker gearbox more prone to problems. Also check free wheeling hubs wrk and 4x4 system all works properly.
Buy parts from ford or nissan or aftermarket, sometimes ford are cheaper than nissan, though they often come in a nissan bag/box - go figure.

Daniel.
for that you should be aiming at 800-1k tops
even if its in a garage ask for a trade sale. to get the price down
Thanks for all the advice guys... will definitely turn blue if/when I pull the trigger ;)
Have a good evening !

Oooo... twin electrics, I'd ask how much towing and how big a 'van its been tugging about (if its a private sale)
If your buying from a garage ask for a look at the log book... note the old owners phone number/address (118-118) and give them a ring to ask about service, any probs etc. most are happy to help! :thumbs
Nice colour though... and lots of shiney bits, so prob not been used much off road (good for the body work... not so good for the 4WD system)! :thumb2

Got shocks on the brain :naughty
Did mean the seat belt mounts :doh They are about 2"s by 1" although if its been undersealed it might make it hard to see them ;)
Off topic
Shocks are going on tomorrow :thumbs
Will wake a thread up after Wales so i can give a on & off road report :thumbs

looks good.
would like to see the under side, dents damage from off roading ect..
IF air con just need toping up to work. get them to do it..
IF all ok then pay them. if not walk away.. yes you can mend it, bu tpointless buying trouble if you know its there...
like said buyers market...
also check road tax bracket.. id look at mine, ( 1999 "T" LWS red ) would go to look but its raining here :lol
Road tax is OK - going up to £205 for 12 months from April.

i noticed the shiney bits too.. very nice. :augie
pity the FORD grill bits dont just fit the T2.. :(
also as said, test the 4wd FULLY if you can.
hi and low OK for short test on road.. IF they realyl dont want you to try it, as why??
could be busted front hugs..
OR just very carful with it..
4WD on road is OK but need to be carful. SHOULD get wind up when in 4WD, more so when in LOW 4WD. will make turning feel harder. dont push it though.
There is also a 3dr SWB on ebay at the moment... looks very clean, but not cheap IMHO.

Not as many shiney 'bits' though!!! :lol
I tow with both a SWB and a LWB... IMHO the LWB is better suited for towing big heavy things, longer wheel base means you dont bounce as much at the rear, slightly heavier... and a much better boot for fitting saddles etc etc in. :thumbs

the only trouble Ive had towing was when the MAF died..
had to stop half way up a hill. then only way to move was in LOW 4WD for the last 20 miles home...
I am in Dorset - only 40 miles from Whitchurch.
I would prefer a derv - more torque.
I have messaged him anyway.

It's up for under £1700.
I'm a haggler buying cars. I reckon that's way over. I agree its a buyers market.
I only paid a grand more than that for a good nick fully specced 02 all original with service last August from a dealer :thumb2
Hard work but well well worth it.
Needed new tyres, had a "driveshaft clunk"....which turned out to be steering stops :augie:augie and the tow bar wiring wasnt fixed up. All that expensive work was reflected in the price reduction as I "reluctantly" accepted the car as it was :lol:lol
Imho its well worth going into every garage you can be arsed or is practical and tell em what your after :thumb2 a lot of s/h places & dealers are terrified of being stuck with 4wd's
Find 2 or 3 and play them off against each other :thumb2
Good luck

Hi Amnesia,
speaking from 1 horsey family to another, you will not go wrong with a T2 or Mav to tow your horse trailer with. I have a 97 T2 With intercooler, and tow regularly my daughters horses to showing events. My T2 just comes into its own when its towing. Can honestly say its the best thing ive ever towed with Bar none!
Incidentally what type/breed of horse you got. and what do you do( showjump, event, or just hack?
Cheers Wayne

Hi Wayne,
We have an Irish Sports (Thoroughbred / Irish Draft cross) called Finley.
He's 12 years old, and stunning (in our eyes). I am still schooling and learning, with the occasional hack, but my wife is very good with him and he's progressing very well. Up to about 3' jumps at the moment.
My wife did a small show at our stables last weekend... just a novice show, but we're hoping to jump him next year at some bigger shows.
Here's a quick pic from last Sunday.
http://www.amnesia.homecall.co.uk/images/finshow/img16.jpg
Anyway, back on topic... I need to get something sorted soon, got some more shows coming up, and I can't take any more days off work. If this Maverick is in good nick tomorrow (the HPI check came up totally clear) then I will get it.
If I like it then I can see myself getting another one for my wife anyway, so will take my time and get a cracker then.
Cheers,
Daniel.
LWB better. My auto LWB used to tow 3- 3.5 ton round easily!

Hi Daniel, thats a nice loooking animal you got there, just showed the pic to the wife and daughter(mad about horses) and they both agree. should do well in the showring. Daughter has a 14- 2 New Forest, called Pikachu which she has progressed to having outgrown her Shetland (Mikey). Show in Mountain and Moorland Classes, nearly always get placed, so doing something right. Will post a pic soon, but gettin late now n need to turn in.
Back to the MAV, Youve come to the right place here, good helpful bunch on here. keep us posted as to whether you buy it or not.
All the best WAYNE

Careful though - i thought the same with my 99-plater til the gearbox went at 120k miles and I had to pay £1500 for a rebuild (try finding an autobox second hand for one of these, its painful)...
