I think i need your opinions on this one please!.

I am concerned about the joke and gags section.

I know the world can be a very serious place and with all the grim things in life makes bad reading, But can i have feedback on this as i just logged in as a guest and 3 out of the last 5 posts that can be seen by guests were jokes, Is this what prospective members are hoping to see when they hit the clubs home page. Are they looking for us for advice or a good laugh?.
I have at the moment altered it so that guests cannot see the jokes forum.

Please let me know what you feel about this.

(I am looking at this from both ways).

Mav.

Thanks for the reply Jace.

I want to make sure we are coming over as the club to be part of.

I am the one that has to think from every angle as most will sit and watch and not say how they feel or what they want.

Thanks,

Mav.

I like the jokes part of the forum as it's one part that anyone can post in & help wash away the stress of our motors breaking. I also understand where you are coming from Mav & perhaps blocking that part from guests may be a good thing depending on the image of the club people want to put across. Perhaps a quick poll on the subject may help to get members views on this.

Well in my very humble opinion I think we should hide the jokes away until said persons become members,   make things like gallery and videos open to prospective members would be good.
Probably going to get shouted down on this one   :|

The jokes section is good but i feel that it probably should be hidden from guests until they are full members. Most guests will probably be looking for help or advice for their motors hence coming on to the site in the 1st place before they see the jokes and more lighthearted side of the club.
What about a poll on the homepage?

I alos think the jokes are pretty good but I agree with mav to a certain extent that so many individual postings for jokes may be a bit too much? what about adding each new joke as an extra to a thread rather than a thread in its own right?

I am a bit concerned about the whole gallery being open to non members as there are photos of peoples kids etc and there are some weirdo's out there! could just the off road photos be open to non members?

hi mav .
i think the jokes are ok .as long as they remain clean`ish.
with profanities removed .
are the jokes removed after so long to free up space .
if you are a prospective member seeing a load of jokes
would not get me to join .
people come here for help and advice. so give them an insite into what the club is about.
photos of greenlaning days, tecnical headings ,mechanical, electrical, ect. plus
TITLES of available downloads. discounts to club members
does the total number of members appear.

Hi again,

You know, I was a bit worried about the first post saying that i was concerned, But from all your feedback it looks as if i was thinking along the right lines.

People that have not joined yet don’t know how much help we have to offer and as a guest they only get to see the home page and limited access.

Once they come in there happy they did, its just getting them to take that step.

Thanks again to you that have replied and those that have not said anything please say what you are thinking.

Thanks, Mav.

i personally think that guests should be able to see the web site but not be able to access the content. after all what do we (members) pay our ten pounds for. guests would be able to see the main forums page but not be able to see the content of the posts.

p.s. appologies if this is what already happens.

With PLANK about the gallery being open to the public as in none paid members, not only about the kid's but also showing car reg's other clubs we are in you have to wipe out (for a better word) the reg on pic's, also the downloads section I think should be for paid members as this way we should encourage more people to join us,not just come along and hi jack the info they need and do a runner.
As for the jokes alot of forums have them on paid members parts to, which I find agood thing. just my 2p worth.

Thanks for the input, But the gallery would not be open for the simple reason you said Paul, To much information on show.

I think we should confine jokes etc to one thread and just keep adding them to the bottom of previous ones, this would stop the last 5 posts sections getting filled up with jokes whilst allowing it to display that there has been a recent post in the jokes section. If the joke thread ends up 123 pages long - so what.

Also, and I know this will be unpopular, can we ban posts that are nothing more than a smiley or a comment of good one etc, they add nothing to the forum and just take up both physical space on page and bandwidth/memory on the server. I have seen this done on other forums and it works nicely once everyone knows the rules.

Good one!!

 Sorry know I shouldn't!!

On one of the Toyota clubs I was in we had the same thing with a ebay thread, just kept adding on to the last one, that way when you logged on you didn't just see the same thing on the home page.

Yes, Good one Hummingbird, Were all working overtime on this one,

I will go in and delete a load of the oldest ones.

They always say that the old ones are the best but not in this case!

Any mod can delete replies.

Perhaps a joke section is in order? however i can see the fustrations of people looking for advice and ideas and only seeing a line of jokes, how ever thier has been some classic jokes told and i for one has had a good giggle.
can't see too much harm if they are in good taste :?:

Trouble is every joke starts a new topic and goes on the home page, If you look at the home page now 6 of the last 8 are as follows.

Will have to sort this one out as its not good.

WATER DEVINING
old chains required!
jokes!
Goldilocks Revisited
FIREMAN
An Oirish Story.
Grandma's letter
A Canadian Mountie
nissan navara
Stolen tail light
my terrano has to go
Gearbox problems
Abingdon Sep 2007
Patrol factory fitted Alarm just gone mad !!
WHAT A WAST OF TIME ABINGDON 4X4 SHOW WAS!!!!!

I think we will have to lock the jokes and gags forums until it can be sorted.

Hi,being one of the main culprits for posting jokes,i agree with all the above,it's just a good way to lighten up things!!but i do agree guests should not see them or limit what they are able to see on the site.
If i have offended anybody please accept my apologies!!

is it just the poster not hitting reply button and then putting in new joke but hitting new topic button opening whole new thread if so guidance to use the post reply method and not new topic be easiest solution

i suppose your between a rock and a hard place on this one. you could just do as some members have suggested and and keep adding jokes on to the same post and see if it works. i'm sure that the club members and i will soon let you know if it isn't :!:

Hi,

Will it work?, Lets try it,

I have locked the jokes and gags,

If anyone starts a new one then a mod will have to step in and delete it or move it,

Mav.

surely thats overkill mate just make sure any new joke has to be a reply so it dont end up clogging list up or cant it be done that way?

mav
02-10-2007, 22:22
Thanks Jace, Thats the way it should to be done
i am sure it can work,

Just come in from work and read through this thread,

If the joke thread ends up 123 pages long - so what.

I have seen this done on other forums and it works nicely once everyone knows the rules.

I agree with HB on this, and at one time we did stop people from just posting smily faces etc as this causes reply messages sent out and slows down the site as a whole.

2 points - 1,if you read back HB's point was made earlier by me! but it is a good idea, maybe a joke of the week' with all old jokes being deleted or archived every monday?

point 2 my old chains required thread is not a joke merely a request for help from pother club members :( dont tell me that is not allowed either :?:

 just realised you had high - lighted the jokes in red so weren't including my thread - sorry!
